Grandfather to all the legendary children who compete in the house balls, Pray Tell, played by Billy Porter, serves as a source of support to Blanca and her house. An adept fashion designer, Pray Tell aspires to one day have his own clothing line sold in a high-end boutique.<\/p>\n

Porter is best known for starring as \u201cLola\u201d in the smash hit Broadway musical\u00a0Kinky Boots<\/i>, for which he won the 2013 Drama Desk and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical. Other Broadway acting credits include the Tony\u00ae-nominated Broadway musical,\u00a0Shuffle Along<\/i>, directed by George C. Wolfe.\u00a0Miss Saigon, Five Guys Named Moe, Grease<\/i>\u00a0(all original cast),\u00a0Smokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Dreamgirls\u00a0<\/i>(20th Anniversary Broadway Concert and LA Ovation Award). Off-Broadway and regional credits include\u00a0Angels in America<\/i>\u00a0(Signature Theater),\u00a0Romance In Hard Times<\/i>,\u00a0The Merchant of Venice, House of Lear<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Radiant Baby<\/i>\u00a0(The New York Shakespeare Festival),\u00a0Birdie Blue<\/i>\u00a0(Second Stage),\u00a0Angels in America<\/i>\u00a0(Actors Theatre Of Louisville),\u00a0Going Native<\/i>\u00a0(The Long Wharf),\u00a0Jelly\u2019s Last Jam<\/i>\u00a0(Alliance),\u00a0Top Dog\/Underdog<\/i>\u00a0(City Theatre),\u00a0King Lear<\/i>\u00a0(Exit, Pursued By A Bear), Jason Robert Brown\u2019s\u00a0Songs For A New World<\/i>(original cast),\u00a0Jesus Christ Superstar<\/i>,\u00a0Antigone, A Chorus Line<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Chicago<\/i>. His one-man show,\u00a0Ghetto Superstar: The Man That I Am<\/i>, debuted at The Public Theater in NYC in conjunction with City Theatre of Pittsburgh and was nominated for a 2005 GLAAD Media Award. Porter was also named \u201cPittsburgh\u2019s Performer of the Year 2003-2004\u201d by the\u00a0Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Porter\u2019s film and television credits include Baz Luhrmann\u2019s\u00a0The Get Down<\/i>\u00a0(Netflix),\u00a0The Humbling<\/i>\u00a0co- starring Al Pacino and Greta Gerwig directed by Barry Levinson, Sundance Film Festival features\u00a0The Broken Hearts Club<\/i>\u00a0(Sony Pictures) and\u00a0Intern, Noel<\/i>\u00a0(with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams),\u00a0Shake Rattle & Roll<\/i>\u00a0as \u201cLittle Richard\u201d (CBS miniseries) among others. His original song \u201cTime\u201d has been featured twice on the mega-hit television series\u00a0So You Think You Can Dance<\/i>\u00a0as well as the 2011 Miss America Pageant. Porter\u2019s concerts credits include opening act for Rosie O\u2019Donnell and Aretha Franklin, Carnegie Hall, John McDaniel and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, as well as The Buffalo Philharmonic, Peter Nero and The Philly Pops, soloist for President Bill Clinton and various benefits throughout the U.S.<\/p>\n

As a director, Porter directed the revivals of George C. Wolfe\u2019s plays,\u00a0The Colored Museum<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Top Dog\/Underdog<\/i>\u00a0at the prestigious Huntington Theater. Porter also has directed a critically acclaimed recreation of\u00a0The Wiz<\/i>\u00a0and conceived a musical revue entitled\u00a0Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Music of Stevie Wonder<\/i>, which starred Chaka Khan and ran at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas in the spring of 2002. Porter conceived and directed\u00a0Being Alive<\/i>, a musical celebration that aligns the cannons of Stephen Sondheim and William Shakespeare and combines them with the soulful musical styles of the African-American experience.\u00a0Being Alive<\/i>made its world premiere in the summer of 2007 at The Westport Country Playhouse and immediately transferred to The Philadelphia Theatre Company, inaugurating their new Suzanne Roberts Theatre. He directed the new musical\u00a0Twilight In Manchego<\/i>\u00a0for the NYMF in the fall of 2008 and is the NAACP Theatre Award winner for Best Direction of a Musical for his production of\u00a0Once On This Island<\/i>\u00a0at Reprise Theatre Company. Porter made his London directorial debut in the fall of 2009 with Olivier Award Nominee Patina Miller at Live in the Delfont Room. Primary Stages presented the highly successful World Premiere of\u00a0While I Yet Live<\/i>, which he wrote, that played at the off Broadway Duke Theater.<\/p>\n

Porter is a Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor, singer, director, composer, and playwright from Pittsburgh. As a recording artist, Porter\u2019s solo albums include his first CD,\u00a0Untitled<\/i>, on A&M records and his sophomore album,\u00a0At the Corner of Broadway + Soul – LIVE<\/i>.\u00a0Billy\u2019s Back on Broadway<\/i>\u00a0was released in 2014. Porter\u2019s newest album,\u00a0The Soul of Richard Rodgers<\/i>, is released on Sony Masterworks.<\/p>\n

Porter\u2019s voice can also be heard on the albums\u00a0A Very Rosie Christmas<\/i>, Jim Brickman\u2019s\u00a0Destiny<\/i>(top ten AC hit),\u00a0Grease<\/i>\u00a0(revival cast album) and more.<\/p>\n

Porter is also a graduate of The Professional Program in Screenwriting at UCLA and is an adjunct professor at his alma mater Carnegie Mellon University\u2019s School Of Drama, where he has directed productions of\u00a0Company<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Letters From \u2018Nam<\/i>.
