What is Transgender Awareness Week?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Transgender Awareness Week is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Transgender Awareness Week is a\u00a0week devoted to raising the visibility of the transgender, non-binary and gender-nonconforming community that is celebrated November 13 – 19, 2020. This year that message couldn\u2019t be more powerful, said\u00a0Cathy Renna, communications director of the\u00a0National LGBTQ Task Force<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cBeing trans is the third-most-interesting thing about me\u201d is what Renna said she hears from many transgender young people these days. \u201cThey want to be seen as multifaceted people \u2013 not what they are, who they are. What we are seeing around young people is incredibly inspiring.”<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Threats to Transgender rights in recent years:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u00a0\u2022\u00a0Transgender people were\u00a0barred from serving in the military<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u2022\u00a0The words \u201ctransgender\u201d and \u201cdiversity\u201d were\u00a0banned in CDC reports<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u2022 There have been challenges at the state level with bathroom bills and religious exemption laws.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u2022 And 2020 saw a sad milestone: At least 34 transgender or gender nonconforming people were killed by violence, most of them Black and Latino women, according to the\u00a0Human Rights Coalition<\/a>. (Those deaths will be marked on\u00a0Transgender Day of Remembrance<\/a>\u00a0on Nov. 20.)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

But there also have been high points, most notably the election. President-elect Joe Biden, who spoke for\u00a0transgender rights<\/a>\u00a0at a town hall, has vowed to eliminate discriminatory executive orders from President Donald Trump and has made\u00a0LGBTQ equality<\/a>\u00a0part of his platform.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Voters also gave at least eight transgender, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming state candidates\u00a0victories on Election Day<\/a>, including tapping\u00a0the\u00a0nation’s first\u00a0openly transgender state senator<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

And a\u00a0Supreme Court ruling in June\u00a0<\/a>affirmed protection of\u00a0LGBTQ workers from discrimination.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

“It’s been said that once people see the media stereotypes, tropes, and clich\u00e9d portrayals\u00a0stacked together in DISCLOSURE, it’s impossible to unsee them. For trans people and allies, DISCLOSURE is an important survey of how media has treated trans people, influencing not only how trans people have come to view\u00a0themselves but also how the world has,\u00a0with a call-to-action to better understand and support the community–on screen and off” (GLAAD).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
