The Unleashed Voice Magazine Named 2017 Black LGBTQ Media of the Year by The G-Listed Honors

The G-Listed’s Black LGBTQ Power 100 list is an annual recognition of global, regional, and local Black LGBTQ personalities, leaders, establishments and icons whose activities have been largely noticeable, impactful and empowering to the public.

The Unleashed Voice Magazine is a national LGBTQ publication headquartered in Memphis, TN.  TUV Magazine is currently circulating in 40 U.S. cities with an intentional focus on the plight of the Black LGBTQ community. TUV Magazine mission is to cultivate the stories of LGBTQ people with engaging and empowering conversation.  TUV Magazine provides comprehensive media coverage of the Black LGBTQ experience through print, radio, social media and digital media.

Team TUV (missing Monick Monell)

TUV Magazine was founded in 2014, by Dr. Davin D. Clemons and his mother Gwendolyn D. Clemons to address the systemic social issues of the Black LGBTQ community that traditional media failed to cover.  In a span of two (2) years TUV Magazine has established itself as a leader in Black LGBTQ media market.

The year started with a bold prediction by RizeUp Magazine.  Rizeup Magazine ranked TUV Magazine #14 out 50 for their annual “One To Watch” Black LGBTQ ranking. TUV Magazine prediction held true and was rewarded the #1 spot for 2017 Black LGBTQ Media entities!

The G-Listed Honors was founded by Waddie Grant a staple in LGBTQ media blogging and established socialite in “all things LGBTQ.”  G-Listed Honors has continued the annual tradition of its Black LGBTQ Power 100 rankings since 2012. The 2017 honorees were selected based on the current activities of individuals and organizations rather than on legacy, celebrity status or social media popularity.  This list equally tributes the triumphant leaders and the controversial voices, the living and the dearly departed, the newly invigorating heroes and the deeply-loved nostalgia.

This year’s winners have contributed meaningfully to the rise in well-known diverse Black LGBTQ voices within the community and society at-large. Such increases in reach and visibility have allowed Black LGBTQ voices to become prominent beyond the usual realms of entertainment, fashion, media, and LGBT activism.

5 Powerful Gay Men of Color

0

Since the dawn of man, there have been many influential and powerful gay men in the world. From Egypt to the Middle Ages, gay men have ruled and accomplished many feats throughout history. In all honesty, we can only assume that the likes of Shakespeare and Alexander the Great identified as gay. Scholars often go back and forth with the little evidence that they have to prove or debunk such gay claims, but we must also understand that the times were very different then. What we identify gay as today was non-existent because there was not a term to describe the commonplace nature of same-sex relationships or sexual activity. In Monaddition, there are also the men to consider who included homosexual innuendos in their works, who probably could not live as out gay men due to the social stigmas against being gay at the time.

There are many powerful and influential gay men in recent history to choose from, but I can only type so many words in this article. Thus, I will highlight five “gay” influential and powerful men: Alvin Ailey, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Harvey Milk, and Bayard Rustin.

Alvin Ailey became a world famous dancer and choreographer who merged the worlds of theatre and various dance genres into one. After dancing for other dance companies, he formed his very own dance group, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, in the late 50s. He created many dance works and toured the world with his group. Ailey’s craft incorporated jazz, modern, ballet, and African dance into his choreography which can still be seen in many black dance academies today. He died in 1989 from AIDS related complications.

The iconic James Baldwin was a provocative writer and activist who injected into his works the themes of racism, social injustice, and even homosexuality. Baldwin created works of art such as the powerful and unapologetic Go Tell It on the Mountain and Giovanni’s Room. He died in 1987 from stomach cancer, and his legacy lives in literature and African American history.

The Hughes — that is, Langston Hughes, also known as the king of the Harlem Renaissance — helped to make Harlem the place to be for young black artists in New York. As a writer and social activist, Hughes developed countless plays, novels, and other works that celebrated black arts, lives, and culture. Mule Bone and The Ways of White Folks were just two examples of his beloved creations that continue to stand the test of time. Hughes died in 1967 of surgical complications related to prostate cancer.

Harvey Milk was nicknamed the Mayor of Castro by the San Francisco gay community because of his pioneering political influence on supporting protections for LGBT workplace protections. In his brief political career, he helped to introduce and pass several pieces of legislation that promoted equal treatment for LGBTQ and other minority communities in San Francisco. Unfortunately, Milk and the actual mayor of San Francisco were assassinated by a former associate within minutes of each other in 1978. Milk’s legacy continues to prosper and gain more recognition in movies, schools, and government.

Last and certainly not least is the amazing, Bayard Rustin. Some would say that Rustin was the brains behind the 1963 March on Washington; in fact, he was indeed the lead organizer of the march. Rustin was one of Dr. King’s most trusted advisors who taught King that the combination of nonviolence and civil disobedience could be an effective strategy to use in the civil rights movement. He was an avid civil rights activist for decades until his untimely death in 1987. Rustin’s contributions were often overshadowed by Dr. King and scandal, but his impact has resurfaced into the public thanks to various acknowledgments of his undeniable contributions that should be noted. Bayard Rustin and his legacy represent the embodiment of why we should remember the influence and power a person can have even behind the scenes. In modern society, we often place too much emphasis on the people in the front or in the spotlight, but we often overlook those important people who have helped to create such accomplishments outside the public eye.

Let’s remember that we rarely accomplish success on our own. In the end, what these men have accomplished is enormous. From writing to dance to politics to civil rights, these men have blazed the trail for future generations. Note, while reading this article, that I haven’t really mentioned much about the men and their sexuality. Although it is remarkable that some of these men accomplished so much as gay men, it was their work first and their sexuality second that should be acknowledged. Thanks to these powerful and influential gay men in history, we now have a history in the making where gay men can be out and powerful creators in their work. Here’s to new legacies in the works.

Dr. King and Bayard Rustin

Surely every one of us has heard of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the most famously prominent figure of the American Civil Rights Movement. But the vast majority of us probably missed the memo on Bayard Rustin, the fascinating Renaissance man who served as a primary strategist and key adviser behind many of the movement’s most impactful events and defining moments. A forward thinker and problem solver in every sense of the words, Rustin acknowledged no limitations and epitomized, in every facet of his life, the aphorism, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Bayard Rustin and Malcolm X

TUV Magazine obtained an exclusive interview with Walter Naegle the spouse of Bayard Rustin. Rustin is remembered during the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s death with Five Reasons to Celebrate the Life, Love, and Legacy (of a Man Our History Books Failed to Mention).

Jose’ Vega Advocate Against Conversion Therapy

Jose’ Vega leads the campaign to fight against conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is the belief that homosexuality is not only sinful but a mental disorder, which is what underlies the combination of the faith community and some licensed mental health professionals who endorse these harmful practices — some of which go as far as to administer electric shocks or enforce slapping oneself while wearing a rubber band on the arm every time a same sex attraction occurs, in order to associate pain with homosexual desires… or even to force people to masturbate while watching heterosexual porn, in order to associate pleasure with the opposite sex.

TUV MAGAZINE EXPLORES “OTHERNESS!”

0

MEMPHIS,TN, May 01, 2017

The Unleashed Voice Magazine does it again! TUV Magazines explores the deep rooted draconian perception of gender identity. The Redefining Issue is all about providing in-depth discussion on moving the margins on gender identity.

Moving the margins allow for more freedom of expression without judgment by removing control mechanism that refute individualism.

TUV believes that society teachings are responsible for creating fear through conformity. This social pressure is necessary in order to make others feel comfortable and reinforce the perception of social norms. But at some point, we must all choose to live the life we love and love the life we live.

How long can we as people conceal who we are? How long can we all go without living our truths? There must come a time when LGBTQ individuals say, I am who I am despite of your refusal to acknowledge my existence.

The moment of self validation and knowing your worth is now.  Instead of waiting on others to label and define us. We must take ownership of our identify and stake a claim in the world.

Inside this issue Author/Activist T. J. Wolfe provides an exclusive feature about what inspired her book Unwanted Heart. Wolfe guides the reader on how to bring greater awareness to masculine and androgynous females in the LGBTQ Community.

Understanding LGBT Spending Habits!

0
Todd Evans, President and CEO, Rivendell Media
Todd Evans Speaks about the importance of advertising with a LGBT Print Media company to capture the buying power of LGBT consumers. The Unleashed Voice Magazine is a client of Rivendell Media and a national magazine in prime position to serve your advertising needs.
Foreword by Todd Evans: LGBT media habits are VERY different from other multicultural/ethnic markets.
The LGBT community is multicultural, but as a group we have very different media habits as compared to other cultural and ethnic marketplaces.  The obvious difference between the LGBT consumer group and the next two largest – the Hispanic and African American consumer marketplaces – comes down to each segment’s community media and the best venues to reach these important consumer groups. The LGBT community does not have a million-plus national magazine nor major TV stations, let alone dedicated networks like BET and Telemundo.  What the LGBT community does have is a vibrant local LGBT press. This is unique in that print is by far the dominant medium to reach the LGBT consumer.
In fact, the LGBT press’ circulation is growing. While print circulation has always had its ups and downs, it is the one marketplace that will see print grow in 2017. LGBT print circulation was up 13 percent in 2015, down 6 percent in 2016 (due primarily to one corporation buying a few titles and then promptly going bankrupt), and now UP 7 percent in 2017, according to the Gay Press Report, which we produce annually.  In the digital age, it’s uncommon to see growth in a segment of print media. And all signs point to 2018 being another growth year in LGBT print circulation.
While LGBT consumers are ahead of the curve digitally – LGBTs were early cell- phone adapters, for example, much faster than the average American – print is still the unifying force.  Yes, we have tons of LGBT websites and digital properties, but most of the content comes directly from the print properties.  Does this mean we should abandon digital marketing in the LGBT market?  Of course not. Digital media is important too and should be utilized.  However, it certainly shows that those trying to reach this market should not abandon print or apply African American and Hispanic digital/mobile campaigns tweaked to the LGBT marketplace and expect the same results.  There are real reasons why digital and mobile is king in other multicultural spaces, but make no mistake about it, the LGBT market is different and unique.  A recent survey of LGBT consumers by Community Marketing shows that local LGBT media reached a third of the gay market (it was a survey of just men), and that held true among gay African American, Latino and white consumers as well as gay Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers.
While on the subject of using media differently than other markets, let’s look at cell phone usage. I love this fact reported in a New York Times article this past March on Grindr:  “The three million daily users have been logging onto the site an average of 18 times a day and spending a total there of almost one hour out of every 24.”  Do you think they are looking at your ad?  Perhaps, but you also want to be where LGBT consumers are expecting to see your outreach, like in your local LGBT publication.  LGBT media has done a wonderful job of making national ads a part of their editorial.  Even today with so many advertising to the LGBT consumer, it is not unusual to see articles about the latest company to do so.  So a new advertiser, especially someone big, is likely to get that coveted native editorial so many clients seek.
As more multicultural agencies and marketers look to the LGBT market to expand from their Hispanic, African American or even Asian marketing roots, it is so important to look with fresh eyes at the research that is readily available about their specific market and media usage to ensure their clients reach their goals and objectives.  One approach, one size – definitely does not fit all.
