WHAT RENAISSANCE MEANS TO ME!

0

Renaissance has always been a loaded word in my life. For years, I lived around the corner from Renaissance High School in Detroit, Michigan. This high school, in northwest Detroit with its name and prestige, was classified as the best high school in Motown. Its claim was that the halls hosted the brightest and best students of the city. In fact, middle school students from across the city had to take an entrance test to gain admission. I took that same test in the spring of 1992, and missed the mark by 7 points. A tad peeved, at my test scores, which prohibited me from going to Renaissance, which was only 5 minutes from my house, led me to Thomas M. Cooley Cooley Senior High School, a mile away.

Although I was smart, I was not the strongest test taker, and I also was sad to see so many of my childhood friends be admitted to Renaissance High School. To be clear, my 4 years of Cooley High was ripe with rich memories, and plenty of friendships that I still hold dear to this day.

When Beyoncé Knowles came out with her 7th studio album on July 29, 2002, I instantly recalled those memories of yesteryear with the name of her album. While I secretly disliked the name, I grew to appreciate its value, and place in history. The tour and the beautiful songs shifted my thoughts regarding this loaded word and now I embrace my fellow Virgo’s way of thinking.  With 2024 upon us, I plan to create my own Renaissance, as I am finally working on major things to propel to the next level. As I have mentioned in previous articles, my search for a forever love has been a mainstay in my life. I have had plenty of situationships. and relationship-like opportunities, but still captured one and only. However, I hope to do a slight shift in its approach for this year. Instead of not looking (never understood that, more on that later), I will concentrate on what I do have. I am soooo blessed to have an abundance of friends and some family who constantly fill my cup with love and laughter. Yes, I still want a partner, and want to give and receive love, but I will start off my 2024 Renaissance with a reframing of thinking.

Let me start with one of the most successful renaissances to ever happen. With all due respect to Queen B, I am very intrigued by the Harlem Renaissance. This important part of history was also deemed the New Negro Movement. The word movement stood out to me, as blacks were searching for new opportunities and peace of mind of overcoming the social stain of slavery. Blacks were concentrated in the deep south, and migrated north to New York City, Detroit and Chicago.  To live during this time (1918-1930) was a beautiful time to learn, grow, and deepen understanding of self. I will work on these same issues, as I look deeper within myself in understanding how my previous actions and situations have played a pivotal role in missing the mark in relationships. I am growing into discovering the art of loving more, while doing less stuff. It is not an easy task, but like the Harlem Renaissance, the sense and overwhelming narrative of self-identity and black expression was felt everywhere, from Harlem to Paris, France. As a man who travels abundantly to see the world, and to quell my curious mind, I will even go to Paris this year to spend some needed time to capture the essence of the life of James Baldwin, who holds a special place in my mind.

I lived in New York City, from 2005-2012 and although I lived in New Jersey (born) and Detroit (raised), it was a shock to see so many people in one place, and this huge world of people, places and all the things was an adult wonderland of everything. It afforded me the opportunity to be myself, but also seek new influences to grow and be greater. Within this year, I will explore this same exploration, as I currently live in Nashville, Tennessee, and although I am keenly aware of the challenges of living my truth in the south, I am reminded how beautiful the volunteer state can be throughout the year. I will take time to slow down the travels and do things near me, and take in more moments of life, and to strengthen the beautiful friendships I have gained over the years.

When you are single, you are constantly seeking partner possibilities. It can come from random gatherings, but also within intimate spaces when you meet people, such at the local museum, or a sporting game. I am very active in my community and meet plenty of people in my career as a public health curator. I will now reframe those opportunities without the intent of possibly meeting my forever, but be more open to what lies beneath. I will not limit myself, and be more and more open to love and the magic feeling it brings.

David Wyley-Long, Special Contributor to TUV Magazine

To conclude, I wish you a renaissance of success for 2024, but within this, please dare to dream bigger and do more. This life we live is quite fickle, and it is all we have. Continue to pour into others, but first keep your cup overflowing with self-love, validation and golden moments.  To my forever love, please let me know when you are ready. I am definitely preparing myself for a timeless renaissance for us for 2024 and beyond.

reBirthing Season to Rest, Reflect, Revise, and Rebirth

0

This public service announcement is sponsored by the letter “R” and the good folks at “Rest, Reflect, Revise, and Rebirth.” Two thousand and twenty-four is the year of RENAISSANCE and now is the perfect time to pause temporarily to rest and recharge. Rebirthing greatness in 2024 will require you to strategically consider how to recharge physically, psychologically, spiritually, financially, and interpersonally for the journey. REST is essential to wellness and high-quality productivity. The erroneous belief that “powering through” equals productiveness and a strong work ethic remains counterproductive to wellness. Powering through leads to exhaustion, ineffectiveness, and over-functioning. How long have you been pregnant with possibilities but too exhausted to birth what you have nurtured in your spirit? Prioritizing rest gives the mind and body time to refuel and devise a plan of action.

After resting, it is time to REFLECT. Reflection is essential for a successful rebirthing season. Reflecting allows you to travel back in time to review what went well, what did not go well, and how you might consider doing things differently in the future. Reflecting is often seen as irrelevant and, therefore, overlooked. However, reflection gives way to revising. In an ideal world, no one experiences rebirth difficulties. But, come on, life isn’t perfect and revising is par for the course when building or nurturing greatness. How will you know what or how to REVISE if you have not taken a moment to reflect?

While revising, you might notice the presence of discomfort. This discomfort is understandable. Too often, revision is associated with failure instead of an opportunity to reimagine what could be or what more you could experience. When we befriend and embrace the practice of revising, the initial discomfort decreases. The awareness of the benefits of revising increases and we begin to view revising as a positive and purposeful stretching of the mind and body. Stretching is good. Stretching means growth. Stretching is an opportunity to receive more.

The step after revising will involve a great PUSH because it will be time to deliver. When you are ready to REBIRTH your vision, allow the practice of SMART thinking and SMART goal-setting to guide you the rest of the way. SMART, as an acronym, can serve as a reminder to think specifically about the life you want to live and develop meaningful and achievable goals that will move you in the direction of the life you want to live.

SMART THINKING GOALS
S STOP talking yourself out of doing what you desire to do.  What is the SPECIFIC life you desire to live?
M Decide what you want to do and then MAKE a plan to fulfill your desire.  How will you MEASURE your success? How will you know you’re progressing?
A ASK yourself, “What sacrifices am I willing to make to experience the life I desire?  Is your goal ACHIEVABLE or do you need to reflect and revise to make your goal attainable vs. aspirational?
R RESIST the urge to lean into perfection, listen to judgment, or expedite this birthing process. What’s the RELEVANCE of this goal? How will this goal improve the quality of your life or get you closer to the life you want?
T THANK yourself for your bravery and willingness to pursue the life you desire. When do you want to accomplish this goal? What is your TIMELINE or fulfillment date?

Before you begin your birthing (or rebirthing) journey, ask yourself the following:

  1. REST. How can I use rest to my advantage? What does rest look like in this season of my life? What barriers could get in the way of resting? Can I (and how might I) proactively minimize these barriers?
  2. REFLECT. What worked? What did not work? What areas of my life require change? What (or who) am I afraid to release? Why am I holding on to the person, place, or thing that may not benefit me? What will I gain if I let go of the NOUN impeding my progress? What sacrifices am I willing to make to achieve my goal? How will my life change when I take the courageous step to prioritize myself?
  3. REVISE. What are my SMART goals? What am I willing to do differently to produce the outcome I want? Who will I allow on this journey with me? Who are my support and accountability partners?
  4. REBIRTH. How do I want to reintroduce myself, my brand, and my purpose to the world?Dr. Umieca Hankton (Dr. U.)

Once you have taken the time to rest, reflect, revise, and rebirth your vision, you will only have one thing left in the immediate moment to do. It will be time to re-PRESENT yourself to the world. Look at folks, and in your best Jay Z voice, say, “Allow me to re-introduce myself; my name is REFRESHED, RENEWED, and READY to show out all of 2024 and beyond!”

Embracing Love: The Vatican’s Step Forward Who Are We To Judge?

0

As a devout gay Catholic, I was very pleased with the decision of Pope Francis that same-sex relationships may be blessed. I was at work the day it was announced and, when I saw the news feed, I became emotional and had to step away from my patient and go in private as my eyes filled with tears.  It was an affirmation from my Church, through Pope Francis, that who I am and whom I love is worthy of being blessed. I’ve known this in my heart for years but to finally hear it from my Church was beautiful.  Love, true love, is always a blessing.  For a group that has been wounded and often marginalized by many religious faiths, I believe Pope Francis was led by the Holy Spirit.  He recognized those sheep left outside the gate and chose to give them a nod of acknowledgment.  It is indeed a step forward!

On the day this declaration was announced, I experienced more love and support from my fellow Catholics and, from those of other faiths as they sent me kind words in response to this step forward. The outpouring from such a variety of people (gay, straight, young, old, allies, co-workers, neighbors, etc) was truly overwhelming.

Clearly the Vatican declaration does not in any way overturn the Catholic church’s doctrine that marriage is between a man and a woman.  It does not allow the church’s ordained ministers to officiate at same-sex marriages. The blessing cannot be given during any formal ceremony.  That said, as Cardinal Blase Cupich, a close supporter of Pope Francis, said, “This declaration…will help many more in our community feel the closeness and compassion of God.” The Vatican policy notes that people seeking God’s love and mercy through a blessing shouldn’t be subject to “an exhaustive moral analysis” to receive it.

Some people wonder why any gay person would stay in any Church that does not fully accept them and the life they live. I believe though, the larger the institution, the slower it advances with society. One can look in either direction and see despair or hope. Because I believe God has a place for each of us when this life is over, I will always choose to look toward hope because where there is love, there is always hope. I also believe the Holy Spirit can influence and surprise us sometimes. Besides, it’s not the end product on this earth that matters most: it’s the journey together as we accompany each other, work for change and share our experiences together.  It’s more about being in community together as a faith family in whatever faith that most connects us to God. I also believe I have a responsibility to hold my Church accountable and work for justice and change. If I leave, I help no one who comes after me.

Soon after Pope Francis began his ministry as Bishop of Rome, when asked about those with a same-sex orientation, he made perhaps his most well-known quote of his pontificate:  “Who am I to judge?”  In these last ten years Pope Francis has increasingly shown that, rather than judge, the church is called to welcome, bless, and embrace the LGBTQ community in Jesus’ name.

In 2005 Bishop-Emeritus Terry Steib founded our diocesan “Catholic Ministry with Gay and Lesbian Persons” here in Memphis.  For 18 years, every first Tuesday of the month, this ministry gathers.  When Bishop Steib began this outreach, he wrote to all families in West Tennessee, “Church is Home to All People of God.”   In this letter he puts it beautifully, “The message of Jesus is clear: ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ In my meetings with gay and lesbian Catholics, I told them that God does not withhold love from any of us. I believe that wholeheartedly. God’s love is unconditional and that is the gift God offers us in Christ Jesus: the gift of loving each other with that same Godly and unconditional love.”

The Catholic Church, in offering God’s blessing to LGBTQ persons, celebrates God’s unconditional love.  Yes, it’s a great gift for the New Year which Pope Francis gives the Church as he encourages us to ask God’s blessing on lgbtq couples showing that they too are always recipients of God’s unconditional love! Forward progress indeed!

LET THE COMMUNITY LEAD

TUV MAGAZINE IS CELEBRATING THEIR ANNUAL 8TH WORLD AIDS DAY ANNIVERSARY ISSUE! “LET THE COMMUNITY LEAD” is the title of this issue which pays homage to the lives of individuals living and thriving positively as well as those who are on the battlefields advocating to end the HIV epidemic.

In 2019, Blacks/African Americans represented 13% of the US population, but they represent 40% of people with HIV. Hispanics/Latinos represented 18.5% of the population, but 25% of people with HIV.

Now that we’ve have gotten all of the technical information out of the way let’s talk about why this theme is important.  “Let Communities Lead” is important because of the financial support, decision making, grant process, etc.; in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  It’s an unpopular conversation that is known quite well for those who work and serve in the HIV Community. This has been a rally cry that funders need to hear if they really wanted to make to see lasting change. Once the funders commit to this mission then the real community efforts can begin to help end the HIV/AIDs epidemic in the communities that are suffering the most.  Community leadership promotes a sense of belonging, equity and pride in the community that are most vulnerable.

“The fact that the Southern Region of the U.S. is still being directly impacted with the highest rates of HIV new diagnosis in 2023 is unacceptable.” The fact that HIV is still rising in the South means that “SEX” should not be an anomaly in our society” _ Gwendolyn D. Clemons, CEO of Relationship Unleashed, Editor-in-Chief of TUV Magazine

WHAT IS WORLD AIDS DAY?

World AIDS Day was the first observed in 1988 and has now expanded into a global health day. World AIDS Day takes place on 1 December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Each year, organizations and individuals across the world bring attention to the HIV epidemic, endeavor to increase HIV awareness and knowledge, speak out against HIV stigma, and call for an increased response to move toward Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S.

On the Cover: Meet the staff of The Emory COMPASS Coordinating Center of the Gilead COMPASS Initiative® engages a nine-member community advisory board (CAB) to facilitate the development, evaluation, and refinement of the Center’s community-led grantmaking and capacity building initiative for HIV service organizations in the U.S. South. Emory COMPASS Center’s purpose of convening and collaborating with a CAB is to ensure that the Center’s work is guided by subject-matter experts that represent the communities and populations that the Center serves. CAB members’ leadership, voices, experiences, and stories are sought to incorporate ongoing qualitative data in the development and implementation of the Center’s community-guided programming.

Putting the Happy Back in Your Holidays: The Healing Power of Mediumship:

The holiday season is often deemed the most wonderful time of the year. The sparkling lights, festive music, and warm gatherings make it an enjoyable time for many. However, for those who have lost loved ones, it can be the most challenging. The joyous celebrations may serve as a reminder of the empty chair at the table or the absence of a beloved voice in the chorus of laughter. It can amplify emotions of sadness, loneliness, and longing. The cultural emphasis on joy and celebration can add to the weight of expectations and exacerbate feelings of depression.

The National Wellness Institute promotes Six Dimensions of Wellness: emotional, occupational, physical, social, intellectual, and spiritual. Addressing all six dimensions of wellness in our lives builds a holistic sense of wellness and fulfillment.  https://nationalwellness.org/about-nwi/

The National Institute of Health states, “An underappreciated primary cause of most chronic conditions is the lack of sufficient daily physical activity. Physical inactivity is a primary cause of most chronic diseases.” Even just a small increase in daily activity such as walking for 30 minutes can make a significant improvement. So, what can we do to make a positive shift either for us or for someone we know?

The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of exercise per week.  That’s 30 minutes a day at least 5 days per week; and that’s just cardio exercise. We are also advised to weight train for 30 minutes at least 2x per week.  That brings us up to 200 minutes per week of activity.  With an average of only 14 minutes of daily exercise, we aren’t even getting 100 minutes a week.  We’re in trouble.

In this issue we provide a wide variety of resources for a Healthy and balanced mind, body and soul. Make use of the tips, articles, and solutions to get a reset for a healthier you!

EMOTIONAL WELLNESS

Contributing Writer Brodderick D. Roary, provides a compelling article on Emotional wellness is just as important as physical health for living a balanced and fulfilling life. Emotional wellness includes having a positive self-image, managing stress effectively, and cultivating healthy relationships. Achieving emotional wellness requires self-awareness, effective communication, and healthy coping skills. While it can seem daunting, making slight changes in your daily life can have a big impact over time. Focusing on consistency rather than perfection is key. Your emotional health and happiness are worth the effort.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

When you think about the word “health,” which area of health immediately comes to mind? Do you find that you instantly think about your physical and mental health? How often do you consider your sexual, spiritual, social, occupational, or financial health? Believe it or not, when exploring our “health and wellness” needs, we should view wellness from a “whole health” lens. We are multi-dimensional individuals involved in a plethora of fascinating ventures. Therefore, it should not be surprising that, as multi-dimensional individuals, our focus should also be multidimensional when we address wellness. Attention to our “whole” health can potentially increase our overall quality of life and save us money.

The bottom line is a few simple steps can go a long way toward improving your eating pattern and wellness.  Still, if you’re trying to live a healthier life, do not just focus on the foods you eat. Exercise, sleep, mediation and social relationships are also important. With the evidence-based tips above, it’s easy to introduce small changes that can have a big impact on your overall health.

On the Cover: The Davis-Washington proudly stand as a unified family with their son Zak! Despite the odds stacked against them this couple has manage to build a legacy by celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary along with the newest addition to their family!

According to recent data it is estimated that same-sex couples make up 1 million U.S. households. Out of that 1 million number data suggests that 43% of same-sex couples have adopted or have step-children compared to 10% of opposite-sex households.

In the U.S. some states use to be able to prevent LGBT couples from adopting because of marital requirements. Now, LGBT couples cannot be denied the opportunity to adopt a child jointly from a public agency. As an extension of this ruling, a law banning gay adoption in Mississippi was overturned in 2016, making joint LGBT adoption legal in all 50 states. In 2017, the US Supreme Court reversed a state court’s ruling that gay married couples must get a court order to have both spouses listed on their children’s birth certificates.

Although these Supreme Court rulings should make adoption fair regardless of sexual orientation or preference, outdated state laws as well as the prevalence of private faith-based adoption agencies in some states make it more difficult to adopt for those who identify as LGBT.

Are you ready to Thrive in spite of? Dr. Umieca Hankton shares 5 tips to get you started on your “Thriving” journey!

Thriving is a personal and purpose-filled declaration to oneself to flourish, succeed, and blossom in spite of the presence of adversity. Thriving is intentional and does not “happen to you;” you thrive by actively participating in your life. To be clear, a commitment to thriving does not mean life will not keep lif’ing. We cannot control if, when, or how life happens; we can only control what we do when life happens. A commitment to thriving means that regardless of life’s twists and turns, you will not cower, you will show up for yourself,  and you will healthily address what needs to be addressed.

GOT PRIDE?

Looking back on when I was a little nappy-headed boy. Then my only worry was for Christmas, what would be my toy. Even though sometimes we wouldn’t get a thing, we were happy with the joy the day would bring. I wish those days could come back once more. Why did those days ever have to go? Cause I love them so_ Stevie Wonder

As we enter June which is officially dedicated as PRIDE MONTH which is marked with a month-long observance in celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community and their culture, history, and contributions. Also, this month will be a period where the LGBTQIA+ community will experience unprecedented attacks from all fronts about how we shouldn’t be celebrated!

Let’s keep the main thing, the main thing! PRIDE is about self and learning to accept and love yourself unconditionally! When I say love, I mean in the way GOD loves you and that is with AGAPE LOVE.

So, for my LGBTQIA+ community, I ask you, do you have PRIDE? If not, I highly recommend disconnecting from things and people that attempt to rob you of your humanity and right to live openly and free. Because GOD has already ordered your steps, you just have to start moving your feet! _ Editor Gwendolyn D. Clemons

Question: At the beginning of the year you tweeted, “I refuse to do and go through the same shit as 2022.” How’s your 2023 so far, especially in terms of upholding that vow to yourself? What are some things that you’re making sure remain in your rear view?

Answer: 2023 has been exciting. I took a huge step forward in my life and refused to move backwards. I’m sticking to that vow I tweeted and making sure I put myself first at all costs. I realized that I needed to do this for me to grow and be the person in both my career and my personal life that I’ve always dreamed to be.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT forthcoming. We are replaceable on our jobs, ask brother Jamie Foxx. WE are irreplaceable to our loved ones. Since the start of the year, I’ve noticed a significant increase in people calling to start therapy because they’ve “reached a breaking point” or feel as though they are “drowning.” This declaration leads me to explore factors contributing to their sense of drowning and self-care practices. Take a moment and guess the factor most commonly identified as a source of relentless stress. If you guessed work, then you guessed correctly. Unfortunately, what is also common is the belief in lack of time or the inability to slow down momentarily to allow themselves to recharge or care for themselves healthily.

TRISTATE BLACK PRIDE MEMPHIS ALLSTAR WEEKEND IS LOADING…

People often as why are Gay Pride events important! Gay Pride is important for several reasons. Firstly, it is a way for members of the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate their identities and promote visibility and acceptance. For many years, people who identified as LGBTQ+ were marginalized, discriminated against, and even criminalized for their sexuality or gender identity. Gay Pride events offer an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate their differences, and to take pride in who they are.

Secondly, Gay Pride events are an important way to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles that LGBTQ+ people face, including discrimination, violence, and inequality.

Thirdly, Gay Pride events provide a sense of community and belonging for LGBTQ+ people.

Finally, Gay Pride events are a way to push for change and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. By coming together and raising their voices, members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies can call for greater equality, representation, and protection under the law. This can help to create a more just and equitable society for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As always we intentionally provide educational, enrichment, and empowering conversations. We invite you to join us as a monthly subscriber, writing contributor or supporter of equity and inclusion. Whatever option you chose, we welcome your voice. If you are interested in being featured please connect with us at info@tuvmag.com!

It is about the silence of German intellectuals and certain clergy—including, by his own admission, Niemöller himself—following the Nazis‘ rise to power and subsequent incremental purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Many variations and adaptations in the spirit of the original have been published in the English language. It deals with themes of persecutionguiltrepentance, and personal responsibility

A recent report has been released by the American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU) where they are tracking 450 new anti-LGBTQ bills. These laws are reaching a historic level of attacks on LGBTQI+ people across the country. Nearly 300 of these laws are targeting kids, “these bills are not about expanding health care, making schools safer, or addressing our mental health crisis,” stated White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre. https://www.aclu.org/legislative-attacks-on-lgbtq-rights. https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-news/tennessee-axed-millions-hiv-funds-scrutiny-far-right-provocateurs-rcna67769

In our home state of Tennessee some of our elected officials have proposed and are advancing 26 of these anti-LGBTQI+ laws, with anticipation of them being signed by Governor Bill Lee into laws. These anti-LGBTQI+ laws does not come without repercussions. LGBTQI+ Americans, especially the Trans Community is experiencing alarming levels in depression, suicidal ideation, and victims in hate crimes.

In addition, to introducing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee directed the TN Dept. of Health to reject the use of available federal funds for HIV prevention services which is estimated around $9 Million dollars. The loss of funding such as this decision amounts to bankruptcy for an organization such as ours, who operates on a budget less than $200,000 a year.

Relationship Unleashed staff, board members and volunteers are committed to fighting for equality for all Americans under the law. Equal rights and equal protections are one of the bedrock principles of our democracy in our country. LGBTQI+ people are deserving of protection and full access to equality no matter where we live.

It is our hope that you will stand with all marginalized and oppressed people to stop these attacks against an already vulnerable community. This is why your financial support is needed for the LGBTQI+ Community now more than ever! TENNESSEE BURNING! THE EMPOWERMENT ISSUE – STAND UP TO ANTI-LGBTQ DISCRIMINATION

0

More than 388 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in 2023 alone, according to the ACLU, including transgender bathroom bans, gender-affirming care bans, and more.

It turns out that even 150 years ago, legislators wanted to police gender expression in public spaces. LGBTQ Tennesseans. Advocates worry that recently passed legislation restricting drag performances in public spaces in Tennessee could be used to discriminate against them and fuel the slew of similar laws being proposed in other states.

Those found violating the anti-drag law face misdemeanor charges in the first instance, punishable by a fine up to $2,500 and/or up to a year in jail. Those found for subsequent violations face a felony charge, punishable by up to six years in jail.

What’s at stake?

  • Laws restricting gender expression in public and in private have been around in the U.S. for more than 100 years, with one in New York only just being repealed in 2021.
  • Critics say the Tennessee bill is so constitutionally vague there is little clarity about what falls under the jurisdiction of the ban, making business owners, performers and others uncertain of what could come next.
  • Others say the laws will be used to target queer Tennesseans everywhere: “It’s … this subtle and sinister way to further criminalize just being trans,” ACLU of Tennessee’s Henry Seaton told NPR earlier this month
  • Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, the drafter of the state’s drag show bill, told NPR in a statement, “Just as current law prohibits strip clubs from admitting children, this legislation would also prohibit sexually suggestive drag shows from being performed on public property, or on any non-age-restricted private property where a minor could be present.”
  • Violations face a felony charge, punishable by up to six years in jail.

Tennessee state Sen. Jack Johnson, a sponsor of the bill banning public drag performances, said in a tweet this month that the law “gives confidence to parents that they can take their kids to a public or private show and will not be blindsided by a sexualized performance.”

For those of us on the front line fighting for FREEDOMS, we are urging those of you on the sideline watching to be keenly aware. These laws and attempts to roll back progressive advancements are calculated and intentionally executed. They have been aggressively introduced in Republican led legislations since 2016 after the 2nd term of President Barack Obama.

Q: Share with us everything else you are creating such as products, traveling and new projects.

A: Of course. I’m releasing an album but I’m going to release each song one by one. I have a record coming out on March 3 called “Altars”. It’s more like a tribute to my ancestors and acknowledgement. I’m focusing on being free in my self-expression so I can come out with hip-hop, R&B, Pop, who knows I am meant to create, so I can’t box myself in.

Also, touching on what you said earlier about mental health. There are now services available on my website to people who need therapy. At indigobypharaohloco.com we now offer virtual therapy sessions with an amazing African American Psychologist that I handpicked myself. It’s hard out here and I know there are many people like me who don’t like to talk to people, but sometimes we need to. We made these sessions affordable because we really want to help our people.

2023 TUV MAGAZINE “UNLEASH YOUR VISION ISSUE IS HERE!” NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, LET’S GO!

Life is just a vapor!

Whew Chile… let me tell ya’ll something! This is the first month of 2023 and when I tell you life is still life-ing! One thing for certain I know to be true is that there are too many people who believe they are in control, in actuality they are not! They believe God’s time is on our calendar and the business of God, The Universe, Allah, Budda, or whatever you believe happens on their time. I am here to share that God (or whatever you believe in) is not a respecter of man-made rules and laws. In the words of Les Brown “in this life we have to learn to expect opposition, because it is surely coming.” As we continue to live and go through life there will always be wins and losses. Sometimes the losses seem bigger than the wins, but these are all about one’s perspective or lack thereof.  This brings me to the point of this article. It’s time to “Unleash Your Vision” and stop waiting on the perfect time because time may not be on your side.

In 2023, I strongly urge you to begin to think of new ways to reinvent yourself everyday. Give birth to the “New You” this New Year! Don’t be the person looking out the window as life passes you by because you failed to put yourself first. I have heard the conversations of strangers who swear that they will no longer play small in life. The common whispers are that people are “sick and tired of being sick and tired” and they are determined to do something about it!

If this is you, I have the perfect course to help you further develop into the person you know you can be. Join me, Coach Gwen the week of February 28, 2023, through April 04, 2023, for a seven-week virtual E-Course titled “Unleashing Your Vision.” Learn intricate life skills and best practices to help lay the foundation for your personal development to becoming the best version of yourself. Gracing the cover of the 2023 inaugural Unleashed Issue is newly elected State Representative La’Tasha D. Mayes, MSPPM a nationally recognized leader in the field of Reproductive Justice, Human Rights and leadership development for Black women and girls.

Representative Mayes is known for her lifelong unapologetic advocacy career for health care, abortion access, Black maternal health, comprehensive sexuality education and so many other intersecting policy issues of reproductive health and rights.

Representative Mayes campaign slogan is “Disrupting politics as usual.” The politics as usual she is speaking about is the lack of respect and support for progressive Black women when we run for office. Usually, the lack of respect of support comes from political parties and political infrastructures. Specifically the ideas of electability, the politics as usual of giving lip service to campaign platform issues without any actual lived or professional experience or track record of leading on those issues are the driving forces.

Representation Matters!

Mayes is a stern believer that we can’t continue with politics as usual when candidates being selected during Special Elections by local party committee members instead of by the voters. (read more) https://issuu.com/theunleashedvoicemagazine/docs/tuv_magazine_2023_jan-feb_unleashed_issue

“The Importance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day”

In January the Tennessee Department of Health shocked Tennessee nonprofits who provide HIV treatment, services, and testing with an unprecedent announcement. They announced that the State of Tennessee would end relationships with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) by not accepting funds related to these services. The only exception would be monies allotted to the Ryan White Program. This announcement could not have come at a worse time because the Ending The HIV Epidemic Campaign for Southern States was treading in the right direction. Shelby County, Tennessee (especially Memphis, TN ) has historically ranked in the top tier for HIV and new HIV diagnosis. So, why would the State of Tennessee make a bold move to cut funding directed to nonprofits to carry out these necessary services?

Tennessee is known for enacting Racists and Homophobic policies!

Organizations such as Relationship Unleashed http://www.runl.org a 501c3 nonprofit who intentionally provides HIV Services to the Black LGBTQA+ community will be directly impacted by the egregious and irresponsible decision of the Tennessee Department of Health. You can support Relationship Unleashed so that the important work they provide will continue to an already vulnerable community by clicking the link above with your tax deductible donation.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, (February 7, 2023) will be an important opportunity to a day to acknowledge progress in #HIV prevention and care among Black/African American people while recognizing much work still needs to be done. Black communities have made great progress in reducing HIV. Yet racism, discrimination, and mistrust in the health care system affect whether Black people seek or receive HIV prevention services. These issues may also reduce the likelihood of engaging in HIV treatment and care.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is a chance to get more involved in getting the word out that HIV is preventable and treatable. With greater awareness about how the disease is spread and how to avoid risky behaviors, people can reduce their chance of infection. With appropriate treatment and medication, people living with HIV can live long and productive lives and manage their disease like other chronic illnesses. That is why it is so important for everyone to get screened for HIV and to know their HIV status. KNOW YOUR STATUS GET TESTED!
