GOT GOD? TUV Magazine Releases the “Spirituality Issue”

0

GOT GOD? TUV Magazine releases the September – October 2018 Spirituality Issue.

In this issue, TUV Magazine explores the religious interpretations of scripture by traditional black churches and how it is used abusively against the black LGBTQ Community.  This scripture interpretation and the argument that follows has traditionally been one of the most complex and controversial religious debates plaguing the black community. The traditional Black Church has long held their stance to condemn homosexuality through a highjacking of God words. However, this false narrative has been the catalyst of unwarranted church hurt onto God’s children (pun intended).

We’ve collected stories and interviews from every walk of life. These stories are necessary to remove barriers and help those outside of the LGBTQ spectrum to better understand what it means to “GOT GOD!”

The objective of this issue is to evoke an understanding of what it truly means to “love thy neighbor.” https://issuu.com/theunleashedvoicemagazine/docs/september-october_final_proof_mag

CHOICES Breaks Ground on First in National Health Center

0

Press Release Memphis, TN – CHOICES will break ground on September 06, 2018 at 1000 A.M. on a revolutionary new center which will provide comprehensive reproductive health care to Memphians. CHOICES’ new facility will be the country’s first nonprofit clinic to offer fully comprehensive reproductive health services including abortion care, LGBTQ+ inclusive fertility assistance, transition-related care for transgender people, integrated mental health services, prenatal care and a midwife-led birth center. The center will house the city’s first birth center where midwives are the primary caregivers and birth takes place outside of a hospital setting.

CHOICES is an independent non-profit clinic, founded in 1974 “What we’re building is accomprehensive reproductive health model, from fertilization assistance to pap smears to birth control to breast exams, abortion care, prenatal care and birth care and menopause management,”,’ says Rebecca Terrell, CHOICES’ Executive Director. In addition, CHOICES serves transgender patients who are managing their hormones with replacement therapy. “Our patients are just as different as the faces you see walking down the street,” Terrell said.

CHOICES new facility will integrate mental health services with physical health care. Licensed counselors and social workers will be available to all patients. CHOICES operates from the fees it charges plus local and national financial support from donors. Some national organizations have also provided substantial support in part because of interest in seeing if the CHOICES model of providing comprehensive services can be replicated elsewhere.

CHOICES new center will also address injustices regarding pregnancy and birth care in Memphis. Women in the United States are more likely to die from childbirth or pregnancy-related causes than other women in the developed world. Research suggests that half of these deaths are preventable. Considerable racial disparities in pregnancy-related mortality exist. The risk of pregnancy-related deaths for black women is 3 to 4 times higher than those of white women. During 2011-2014, the pregnancy-related mortality ratios were 12.4 deaths per 100,000 live births for white women, 40.0 deaths per 100,000 live births for black women, 17.8 deaths per 100,000 live births for women of other races.

https://memphischoices.org/ Learn More

A capital campaign has been underway over the last year to raise the 4.2 million dollars needed for the project. CHOICES is less than $500,000 away from that goal. The final push to raise the balance of the project budget will focus on the “Quilt of Courage” which will be an original, quilt-themed art piece that will be prominently displayed in the new center. The piece is being designed by local artist Kiersten Williams, and will be a visual representation of the diversity of people who voice their courage for CHOICES. Squares on the Quilt of Courage can be purcahsed at CHOICES website.

The CooLots are intersectionality personified. The Washington, D.C.-based band embodies a sound that the RAW community describes as a “melting pot of different styles and talents [that] come together to create feelings never experienced before.” The talented individuals that form this eclectic band each carry a style all their own; however, they come together to form a synergetic group that appeals to the eccentric in us all.

The Coolots “refuse to be bound by industry standards and societal expectations; rather, they use their platform to inspire personal evolution and growth. They are here to indulge the hip grinders, the lyrically inclined, the head bangers, and the soul sisters.” http://thecoolots.com/

TUV Magazine Features Shea Diamond, Up & Coming Trans R&B Pop Singer

The Unleashed Voice July – August PRIDIssue Exclusive Interview!

Releasing her debut EP, “Seen It All” — nearly a decade following release from a men’s prison after a desperate crime to obtain means of transitioning to her true gender — singer/songwriter Shea Diamond (as in, “She a Diamond”) reflects on unearthing and flaunting her truest self, and on the universal love that’s missing to encourage so many others to live just as authentically.

TUV Editor Whitney Johnson and Shea chatted for a personal and upclose interview to gather her inspiring fairy tell story.

Q: How did you discover music as your outlet for expression?

A: The theater turned me on because I was always playing a character. I had to always pretend to be something that I wasn’t, or I would get my ass whipped. So I had to pretend to be a certain way, for survival. So I learned. I learned where they could see through the mask. If you had your voice low and you had your legs open, but you still talk with your hands… then they’ve caught you (2018 July – August Pride issue has remaining interview answer).

Q: How did you come into the name Shea Diamond?

A: The name given to me when I was born, the name I paid a whole lot of money to give back — that was the person that people loved. They didn’t love me. Who I was brought shame to them. They were saying, “You can be anything you want to. Just don’t be no girl.” They told me that I wouldn’t be successful as a trans woman, that I wouldn’t make it, that I was wrong, that I was going to hell. We’ve demonized the existence of trans people, gay people, every spectrum in-between (2018 July – August Pride issue has remaining interview answer ).

Q: Was there a time when you believed what you’d been told, that you wouldn’t succeed?

A: Yes. Yes, yes.

Check out Shea Diamond’s introspective single “I Am Her”, her latest flirty single “Keisha Complexion”, and her debut EP “Seen It All” on:

Loving Our LGBTQ Children on Mother’s Day! “A Message of Support!”

0

On Mother’s Day, the media gives considerable attention to our mothers, our sisters, our daughters, and our grandmothers, by highlighting the contributions these women make to their families and communities. The lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents and their families are often absent in Mother’s Day coverage since print and electronic press reports often focus solely on straight parents.

It is widely known how harrowing the stories from the opposite side are, from parents rejecting their kids, to kicking them out of their homes, to even resorting to murder, all because of their children’s sexual orientation.

The pictures of love captured within these pages illustrate the authentic bond shared between these parents and their children.  To all mothers out there who give their LGBTQ children the unconditional love they deserve, we all say THANK-YOU!

Happy Mother’s Day!
