“Even In Death Prince is Causing Controversy”

0

Even in Death, Prince is causing the same Controversy he sang about his entire life. (Controversy, pun intended!) I think it’s because people now realize what a Powerful, Gifted man he truly was. Think about it! He dared to be himself in a world full of judgment. He introduced the world to a beautiful human spirit that none could deny was uniquely created to gift us with music. Because of his mystique and elusiveness, rumors swirled throughout his life with invasive questions such as, “Is he straight? Is he gay? Is he black? Is he white?) These questions may have arisen because of his outer expression of his presentation to the world. Whenever seen in public, Prince always adorned make up high heels and flamboyant attire .

Prince’s music was very sexually suggestive, and early in his career very sexually explicit. Prince’s battle was against a world which demanded he Live in a Box in order to make others feel comfortable. However, Prince blew the box up instead. Prince’s presentation was androgynous and queer which was frowned upon in a heternormative society (and still is, to the hypocrisy of many) but he never conformed to fit in. Prince also left no answers for the hypocrites who thought they were entitled to his personal and private life because it is (None Of Your Damn Business).

I am so glad that I got to fully experience the musical genius Prince from the beginning of his career until the end — because to those who denied his brilliance and declined to support him all because of his queerness, “The JOKE was on You!”
To the enjoyment of us who LOVED❤ the musical genius Prince we rode the train to the last stop, didn’t we? ❤

My Thorn My Destiny Faith and Identity: Dr. Elise Saulsberry’s Testimony of Pain, Purpose, and Divine Calling

0

My Thorn, My Destiny, the forthcoming memoir by Dr. Elise Saulsberry, is a raw and inspiring journey of faith, resilience, and authenticity. From the quiet ache of church pews to the fierce wrestle of identity, Dr. Saulsberry opens her life with unflinching honesty and grace. This transformational story is more than a memoir — it’s a powerful testimony of how God turns pain into purpose.

There comes a moment in every believer’s life when we look back and realize the very thing that caused us the most pain has also been the thing that pushed us closest to God. For Dr. Elise Saulsberry, that painful thing had a name — a thorn. Not the kind you pluck from your finger and toss aside, but the kind Paul wrote about in Corinthians. A thorn that follows you, wrestles with you, speaks to you when the church refuses to, and ultimately becomes the very reason you begin to seek God earnestly for who you really are.

Dr. Elise Saulsberry

The Silence of the Sanctuary

Dr. Saulsberry’s journey begins where many of ours do — within the four walls of the church. As a little girl sitting in polished pews, she felt God early. The sermons stirred her spirit. The music moved her soul. But she also learned something else — sometimes the place meant to heal you can unknowingly harm you.

Messages cloaked in righteousness left wounds of shame. Silence around identity left her questioning her worth. She found herself asking the kind of questions believers aren’t always allowed to ask publicly:
Why did God make me this way?
Does God still love me if the church struggles to?
Where do I belong when the sanctuary feels like a courtroom?

Rather than turning away from God, she clung tighter — determined to find the truth of who He created her to be. And in that pursuit, she began to understand that faith is not tested in the light of acceptance — it is forged in the shadows of being misunderstood.

A Message for the Ones Still Wrestling

There are countless believers silently carrying their thorns: Women told to shrink their voices. LGBTQ+ Christians told they don’t belong in the house of God. People burdened by spiritual shame. Those who love God but have been wounded by His followers. Dr. Saulsberry writes for all of them — to remind them of what religion sometimes forgets to say:

You are not a mistake.
You are a masterpiece in motion.
You are a reflection of God’s creativity.
Your identity is not your curse — it is your calling.

The Destiny Revealed

Toward the end of her memoir, she invites readers to reimagine their own thorns: What if the thing you prayed for God to take away. Is the very thing He plans to elevate?

What if the rejection that broke you
is what God uses to open new doors?

What if the destiny you fear
is the destiny you were born for?

This is where My Thorn, My Destiny shines brightest — not as a story of survival but one of divine intention. It is an anthem for believers who dare to trust God with their whole truth.

If you are tired of hiding the parts of yourself God handcrafted with purpose…
If you’re still healing from the wounds of church hurt…
If you’re searching for a faith that makes room for every piece of who you are…

Then My Thorn, My Destiny was written with you in mind. Let this book be your companion on the path to wholeness.
Let these words remind you that God’s love is not conditional — it is complete.

Defending LGBTQ+ Families: Editorial Response to Harmful Faith

0

Let’s talk honestly for a moment not as an organization writing a press release, but as friends who care about our community and the truth.

Someone who once stood right beside us who preached affirmation loudly and boldly has now taken a public stance that LGBTQ+ love is unnatural and doomed to fail. And he’s saying this from a platform that we helped build.

Yes. We.

This community that he now condemns is the very one that showed up to his services, sowed into his ministry, and lined his pockets with years of LGBTQ tithing. We championed his leadership. We believed in his calling. We opened doors and hearts for him.

And we will not sit by quietly while he or anyone else disrespects the families we have built.

Our marriages are real.
Our relationships are real.
And the children we raise are thriving in homes full of love, joy, stability, and pride.

Two moms or two dads does not make a family broken.
A trans parent does not make a home unstable.
Love does not become invalid because someone lacks the imagination to recognize it.

If anything, our love has had to be stronger built in a world that keeps trying to legislate it out of existence.

So yes, questions now need answers:
Will he also renounce the title of Bishop the very title conferred upon him by the affirming movement he now rejects?
Will the fellowship that consecrated him step in with accountability?
Or is he willing to tear down only the parts of his story that feel uncomfortable to hold?

Here’s the truth:

There is a long history of church leaders harming LGBTQ+ people and then expecting us to take the high road while they walk away clean.

But not this time.

We refuse to let our community be used as a stepping stone for someone else’s spiritual confusion.
We refuse to absorb the hurt while someone else gets applause for “finding the truth.”
We refuse to apologize for surviving what was meant to destroy us.

He has every right to navigate his personal struggle.
But that struggle does not give him permission to call our families counterfeit.

Faith that harms isn’t holy, it is harm in a robe.
And we are not dressing it up anymore.

Faith that harms isn’t holy, it is the very thing we need saving from.

Faith that harms isn’t holy, it is a gospel stripped of grace.

We hope he finds peace. Truly.
But his journey is his own cross to carry.
We will not carry it for him especially if the weight is meant to crush us.

We are a people who have already endured the heartbreak of exclusion and chose to love anyway. We are not returning to a wilderness we fought our way out of.

We stand firm in this truth:

If God is love then love still wins.
Our love still wins.
Our families still win.
Our future still wins.

We are staying right here in the victory we built together.

A Survival Guide for LGBTQIA+ Folxs

Project 2025, designed by the Heritage Foundation, proposes policy changes that could significantly impact LGBTQIA+ individuals by rolling back rights and protections in various areas of life. If enacted, Project 2025 could limit anti-discrimination protections by reinterpreting the landmark Bostock v. Clayton County decision, which previously expanded employment protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Project 2025 seeks to restrict Bostock’s scope, potentially allowing workplace discrimination based on LGBTQIA+ status in hiring, firing, and other employment decisions, impacting the security of LGBTQIA+ workers across the board. WHAT IS A SEROVERSARY?

Seroversary is the date of which one tested positive for HIV.

When I first heard the words “You are HIV positive baby,” I didn’t know what the future held. I felt a flood of emotions: fear, confusion, embarrassment, but most of all disappointment. _ Eddie Wiley

EDDIE WILEY

Well it’s ten years later, and I’m still out here using my voice and experience to support and uplift the community. I posted on social media that I wanted my 10th seroversary to serve as not only a milestone, but as a reminder that life with HIV is still full of possibilities. I wanted to tell others living with HIV that they are loved, that they can find joy again, that they are more than their HIV status. Every day, we are proof that thriving is possible, and we deserve to live boldly, with love and pride. Now get out here and thrive, baby! MEMPHIS COMMUNITY ORGS TO HOST NATIONAL FAITH HIV/AIDS DAY

0

Join Gilead Sciences, Relationship Unleashed, Tristate Black Pride, Cathedral Foundation, and Cathedral of Praise Church of Memphis, Inc. for a day of Interfaith Worship, Community Conversation, and Dinner on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM CST at Cathedral of Praise Church of Memphis, TN 38111 (inside Buntyn Presbyterian Church).

This event is being held in observance of National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.  National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was first observed on August 27, 2017. It was established to recognize the critical role that faith communities play in HIV prevention, education, and support, and to mobilize these communities to take action against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Why is National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness day important in Memphis? According to data from the Tennessee Department of Health, HIV rates in Shelby County have increased 36% since 2018. Syphilis rates have increased by 100%. Between 2018 and 2023, HIV rates among those between the ages of 15 to 19 years old increased by 40%. That same age group saw a 150% increase in syphilis rates, according to the health department. https://wreg.com/news/local/cases-of-hiv-syphilis-continue-to-skyrocket-in-shelby-county/

Overall, National Faith HIV/AIDS Awareness Day leverages the influence and reach of faith communities to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in a compassionate and effective manner.

  1. Engagement of Faith Communities: It recognizes the crucial role that faith communities play in addressing public health issues, including HIV/AIDS. These communities can provide support, education, and advocacy, reaching individuals who may not be engaged through other channels.
  2. Combating Stigma and Discrimination: Faith-based initiatives can help reduce the stigma and discrimination often associated with HIV/AIDS. By promoting understanding and compassion, faith communities can create more accepting environments for those affected by the disease.
  3. Education and Awareness: This day provides an opportunity to educate people about HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. Faith leaders can disseminate accurate information, countering myths and misconceptions about the virus.
  4. Support and Compassion: It highlights the importance of providing emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Faith communities often offer counseling, healthcare services, and other forms of assistance.
  5. Advocacy and Policy Change: The day encourages faith leaders and communities to advocate for policies and programs that support HIV/AIDS prevention and care. This can lead to increased funding, better healthcare access, and improved services for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
  6. Community Mobilization: It fosters collaboration among different faith groups, healthcare providers, and community organizations. This collective effort can enhance the overall impact of HIV/AIDS initiatives and reach more people in need.

Tell a friend or two and come enjoy an evening of education, and love. Because whether you know it or not “Advocacy is the Church’s Business!”

TRANSCENDENT LOVE: A VIBRANT CELEBRATION OF LOVE WITH MALIK AND RAHKEL

0

The 2024 Pride Edition of “The Unleashed Voice Magazine” is a vibrant celebration of Pride Month. Pride Month is held in June to honor the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. This uprising against police brutality and discrimination marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ liberation movement.

Diversity & Celebration

Visibility and Representation

Pride month celebrates the diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, recognizing the variety of identities, experiences, and contributions. This celebration fosters a sense of belonging and community among individuals.

Advocacy and Education

Raising Awareness

Pride Month raises awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, including discrimination, violence, and legal inequalities. It educates the public on these issues and the need for continued advocacy and reform.

Personal Empowerment and Support

Affirmation of Identity

For many LGBTQ+ individuals, Pride Month is an opportunity to affirm their identities and feel proud of who they are. It can be an empowering experience, fostering self-acceptance and confidence. Pride events create a sense of community and solidarity. They provide a space for LGBTQ+ individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences and struggles, reducing feelings of isolation.

Cover Story: This isn’t no ordinary love. This cover story is a detailed profile of the prominent trans activists Rahkel Henry and her partner Malik. Both are making significant contributions to the LGBTQIA+ community through various advocacy fronts. In this feature they are transparent and vulnerable with their personal journeys, struggles, and triumphs exemplify the spirit of Pride.

Malik and Rahkel are producing a new series called TransWorld Atlanta: which is about telling stories by real people. They believe that too often trans and non-binary stories are told by those that are not transgender or non-binary, but Transworld allows these individuals to tell their unique and authentic stories. The purpose of Transworld Atlanta is to save lives. We want to show young people that they are not alone. We know that often children don’t quite have the words for what they feel on the inside but shows like Transworld Atlanta provides representation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AKh1VnGEOw&t=41s&pp=ygUTdHJhbnMgd29ybGQgYXRsYW50YQ%3D%3D

“The one thing that we have learned over the years is that representation matters. Transworld takes a deep dive into those that are living with or at high risk for HIV. Transworld provides knowledge on what it means to be a transgendered father giving birth. Stories of injustice and hate are also being shared. Every season the Transworld franchise’s goal is to share stories of empowerment, beauty, love, triumph, and resilience. All lives Matter and Transgender individuals are human.”_ Rahkel & Malik

“retroLUV, Volume 1: Vent Sessions” is an album born from personal pain, recorded over several years. The artist began the project in 2017 following a breakup with his fiancée. Initial attempts to produce tracks were unsuccessful until he met producer Ashton Harris in 2022. Q: Please tell us the backstory of how the two of you met?

A: Our story starts before we really knew each other. Tanesha produced an LGBTQIA+ web series on Youtube, and I used to work with one of the assistant producers, Tyler. At the time, I (D’Lessia) was in a relationship, and Tyler told me about the show I used to watch every week.

During the pandemic, Tanesha and I both went through a breakup. Still, we did not know each other, nor did we communicate with each other. One day in October 2020, I (D’Lessia) reached out to Tyler on Facebook and told her that I was tired of being single and wanted to know if she had any single friends. Tyler responded by saying, “Hey, girl! I think that my friend Tanesha is single.” Then she provided me with a screenshot of Tanesha’s Facebook profile. We became FB friends, and I would check out her page occasionally, but nothing serious. We met at my best friend’s daughter’s birthday party once, and Tanesha was hired to do the videography. We ACTUALLY WALKED INTO THE PARTY TOGETHER!

However, I (D’Lessia) did not introduce myself despite watching her page for about a month. I could not appear thirsty. During my “stalking” days, I did realize that Tanesha’s birthday was 12 days after mine. We were both the same zodiac sign, #Saggang, but I want to say either Thanksgiving or Christmas, she posted this picture of a woman and captioned read “Mine.” I thought it was her girlfriend and was like I’m not a homewrecker and stopped my stalking. It wasn’t until Feb. 1, 2021, that I announced my partnership with a local organization within the city that, ironically, Tanesha had worked with about a week prior. Our mutual friend Tyler reached out to me asking if I had run into Tanesha because she had worked with them recently. I did not think ANYTHING of it, but the next day, Tanesha slid into my DMs. She made some small talk and revealed that Tyler had mentioned me before and asked me if I was still available; the rest was history.

Q: What were the deciding factors for you both to get married?

A: One of the main things we discussed was our personal healing prior to meeting each other. We both had gotten out of relationships around the same time unknowingly, but we independently worked on ourselves. That time to heal really set the foundation for us when we met. We were both happy as singles; so, when we started dating, we were intentional with our dating practices and honest. We were ready. We had those deep conversations that people often run away from during the dating process, we had them early on because of our past experiences. Marriage was something that we both discussed throughout dating and found compatibility, openness, safety, love, and laughter. We understood each other and we balanced one another, which solidified we were ready to take our relationship to the next level.

Q: Is LGBTQ representation important for the two of you?

A: D’Lessia: Yes, it was because I didn’t know any Black lesbian women is what delayed me “coming out.” My only reference was someone more masculine presenting and that wasn’t who I was, which is why I was in relationships with men before I started openly dating women.

It is also very important to me for younger generations to see us to create visibility. Not to be seen but to highlight that the LGBTQ community are regular people doing everyday things.

A: Tanesha: Very much so….. We must be true to who we are. But in the same sense maintaining our own identity. Being able to represent a broad spectrum of people and culture is very important. Especially being a black woman in this community.

Q: Where did y’all honeymoon?

A: For our honeymoon, we spent a week in Costa Rica. We had hardly anything planned and just allowed us to be present with one another and bask in this new chapter of our love story.

“Stepping Into A New Light: My Journey Toward Personal Renaissance”

0

For years I had been going through the motions of life without really living. I was stuck in a rut, unfulfilled and lacking purpose. I felt disconnected from who I truly was and what really mattered to me. Everything seemed dull and gray. I knew there had to be more to life than just existing from day to day.

I realized I needed a change—a rebirth of sorts. I wanted to rediscover my passions and get back in touch with what inspired me. I was ready to start a journey of self-exploration and renewal. This is the story of my personal renaissance.

The first step was decluttering my life both physically and mentally. I did a deep clean of my home, getting rid of all unnecessary items that no longer served me. This created space, both literally and figuratively, for new things to enter my world. I also took time each day to meditate and clear my mind of cluttering thoughts of worry, regret, and negativity. This inner decluttering process helped me gain clarity and focus on the present moment rather than dwelling in the past or worrying about the future.

With a clearer mind and space, I began exploring new interests and revisiting old ones. I signed up for art and cooking classes to nurture my creative side. I dusted off my old dancing shoes that had been sitting unused for years and started dancing again. On weekends I went hiking and exploring nature, reconnecting with the outdoors that I loved as a child. I also joined a book club to rediscover the joy of literature and discussing ideas with others.

In getting involved in these new activities, I was able to meet like-minded people. Some of them became good friends who also encouraged my self-discovery journey. We challenged each other to try new things outside of our comfort zones and supported each other through any growing pains of change. Surrounding myself with positive people who shared my desire to learn, and grow was hugely motivating.

I started a journal to document my experiences and reflections. Writing down my thoughts and feelings helped me process everything I was learning about myself. Some entries celebrated small victories and realizations while others expressed insecurities and growing pains. Over time, I noticed myself becoming more self-aware, confident, and comfortable in my own skin. The journal was like a roadmap of my personal evolution.

As I delved deeper into my renaissance, I realized the importance of balancing activities that fueled my mind, body, and spirit. I continued nurturing my creative side with art classes, began a daily yoga practice for mental and physical well-being, and found spirituality through nature walks, meditation, and volunteering in my community. Finding harmony among these different aspects of myself was key to feeling truly reborn and renewed.

My journey also involved addressing difficult life lessons from my past. I had some heart-to-heart talks with loved ones and friends to gain closure over past hurts or to seek their forgiveness for mistakes I had made. I also went to counseling to work through unresolved emotional baggage that was holding me back. Facing these challenges bravely allowed me to leave the past behind and fully embrace the present. My rebirth journey isn’t over, but I’m grateful for how far I’ve come. I’m living with more intention, following my bliss, and supporting others in doing the same. While the path wasn’t easy, I’m so glad I took that first step to break free and be reborn.

Here are some key steps to take for your own Personal Renaissance:

  1. 1. Declutter your life. Physically declutter your living space by getting rid of items you no longer need. Mentally declutter by clearing your mind of unnecessary worries, regrets, and stresses. This creates space for new things.
  2. Rediscover your interests. Reconnect with old hobbies you used to enjoy but left behind. Explore new activities, classes, or skills that appeal to your evolving interests and passions. Try different arts, sports, crafts, or volunteering opportunities.
  3. 3. Set goals. Take time for self-reflection on your core values, strengths, and dreams. Define some goals that inspire personal growth in areas of your life that matter most – career, relationships, wellness, creativity etc. Make plans to achieve them.
  4. 4. Nurture your mind, body, and spirit. Balance activities that fuel and challenge you mentally like learning, physically through exercise and nutrition, and spiritually through meditation, nature, or service. Pursue holistic well-being and harmony.
  5. Meet new people. Get involved in local interest groups, clubs, or classes where you can connect with like-minded souls. Their encouragement and your shared experiences will motivate positive change.
  6. Journal your progress. Document your learnings, emotions, goals, and growth over time. Writing provides clarity, tracks your evolution, and celebrates both small wins and challenges along the way.
  7. Address past issues. Seek closure over past hurts through heartfelt talks. Process emotional baggage or unhealthy patterns through counseling or self-reflection. Heal fully to move forward unencumbered.
  8. 8. Be patient yet persistent. Significant life renewal takes time and commitment. Stick with healthy habits daily while allowing natural highs and lows. Celebrate small wins and milestones to stay motivated on your journey of self-discovery.
