0

A Different Direction”, http://www.sampsoncomedy.com is a story about a black, gay man named Frankie who struggles to make a living, while facing the challenges of being at a crossroads of doing what’s best for his personal wellness… one of the most courageous and heartbreaking decisions he has to make.

Sampson McCormick (Frankie Bailey)- Sampson McCormick is an experience, a down to earth comedic force of nature, and has been one of the most sought after voices of diversity in comedy for close to two decades. He’s appeared on BET, TV One, VICELAND “PayDay”, a comedy special “That B*%@# Better Be Funny” (2013). He was a supporting actor in the role of “B.D.” in the off-Broadway run of “B-Boy Blues: The Stage Play” (2013, 2016), and co-starred in “I Live Here” (2016), which was nominated for a Student Academy Award.

Darryl Stephens (Travis Mitchell) – Darryl Stephens is an actor and producer, known for “Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom” (2008), “Boy Culture” (2006) and “Noah’s Arc” (2004). In 2011, was an Ovation Award nominee as a Featured Actor in a Play for the role of Victoria in the Bootleg Theatre production of “The Interlopers.” His impressive resume also includes “Another Gay Movie” (2006), “DTLA- the Series” (2012) and “Beyond the Lights” (2014)

Chris Wilson (Landlord) – Chris Wilson is an actor; he’s appeared in “Congo Cabaret” (2018) and in various theatrical productions around the Greater Los Angeles area.

Ms. Laura Hayes (Phyllis Bailey)- Laura Hayes is an actress and director, whose most notable television  credits include “Martin” (1992-1995), “Def Comedy Jam” (1993) and the blockbuster Showtime film  “Queens of Comedy” (2001) the album from the performance was nominated for a GRAMMY award for Best Comedy Performance. Additionally, she is most known for her wisecracks from the kitchen on BET’s “Comic View” (1994-2001), “I Got the Hook Up” (1998), “Beauty Shop” (2005) and “Virus” (2006).

What was the inspiration for the film?

The inspiration for the film came from personal experiences, as well as a need to contribute to establish more narratives for LGBTQ and People of color on film. Additionally, it is very important that those of us, who live these experiences, document them through our respective creative outlets. Simply put, as a creative, I realize that our complexities as minorities are missing from the screen, it’s our duty to create them when we realize that they are missing. There are also too many stories that simply focus on sex, or us being victims of our various circumstances, which is not the case with the majority of people of color and LGBTQ people, who find the courage to take on our challenges and move forward as best we can in our lives. That part of the story needs to be told more often.

How long was the film in production?

The film was in production from July 2018 until December 2018. Filming was originally slated to last for one week, but one of the original cast members had to be written out due to a schedule conflict. From there, bits of scenes were shot, and production was halted due to a rewrite. From there, we faced more schedule conflicts as most of the cast were busy with various projects and long term commitments. Several shoot dates were postponed due to the weather, but eventually, the remainder of the film was shot in two days.

What do we hope to achieve with the narrative of this film?

Mental health issues and topics that affect the mental health of LGBTQ people and black families is not a commonly addressed issue in our stories. The reality of mental health issues and the impact that they have on our behaviors and relationships with our families are a harsh reality, and as many of us aim to heal and create boundaries in toxic relationships with ourselves and even our families, the topic of the film could be a tool to aid in the very important conversations that we are having around reclaiming mental health and having healthy relationships with ourselves and those who we interact with.

New Digital Series Focused on HIV + Woman

0

In honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness day, series creator/director Carlton Jordan readies POZ ROZ (tag: Pozitive Vibes Only); a first of its kind digital series based on the life of spunky, passionate and free-spirited Rozzlyn Mayweather aka “Roz” who leads a carefree life filled with gay BFFs, sorority soirees, Black Twitter arguments and “woke” posts on her social media. Like many millennials, she’s searching for her purpose and trying to get anything to stick, until an HIV diagnosis rocks her already shaky world.

POZ ROZ takes place a few years after Roz’s HIV diagnosis as she attempts to re-enter the world she disappeared from. Her goal is to begin a new life as a confident, sexual, unapologetic, and unashamed HIV+ Black woman. Roz’s naivety in thinking her friends, family, and lovers will accept her newfound situation with open arms, causes her to question everything she knew about life, love, and being undetectable.

POZ ROZ is grounded in its message about sexual health in the Black community and aims to drop stigmas associated with STDs. Series creator and director, Carlton Jordan says: “It’s important to have raw and relatable discussions about sexual liberation along with health so we can remove stigmas, which will ultimately lead to healthier lives for everyone. POZ ROZ opens the door to this conversation and humanizes a circumstance that many people still fear and misunderstand through comedy and authenticity. I hope this project sparks these types of conversations that make us a smarter, more empathic and connected community.”

POZ ROZ boast an all black and inclusive crew behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. The Series is produced by Angela Burris and Natasha Ward. Executive Producers James McKnight, Vanessa McKnight, Malachi Rivers and Robyn Jones.

Coordinated by the Strategic Leadership Council, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is observed each year on February 7 to increase HIV education, testing, community involvement, and treatment among black communities.

Dr. Davin Clemons Exclusive Interview with USA Today

Dr. Davin Clemons on his experience in the Memphis Police Department, his federal lawsuit against the department and his current role at the MPD. USA TODAY

In some cases, officers were able to survive the public scrutiny that comes with suing their police department — and even continue advocating for LGBT people.

Check out this video on USA TODAY: https://www.usatoday.com/videos/news/2019/02/07/memphis-police-lgbtq-liaison-speaks-out/2801981002/

Officer Davin Clemons filed suit in 2016 for the sexual orientation discrimination he says he endured at the Memphis Police Department in Tennessee.

When he got engaged, Clemons said his colleagues mocked him. No one ever showered in the police department’s bathroom while he did, Clemons said, because he is gay.

Supervisors allegedly expressed displeasure about the attention Clemons brought to the unit as department LGBTQ liaison. They held him to a different standard, including assigning him mandatory overtime and unfairly disciplining him for a driving accident in inclement weather, his lawsuit alleges.

His close-knit, elite law enforcement unit prized hypermasculinity, A-type personalities and conformity, Clemons said. And as a black, gay man with groomed eyebrows and manicured fingernails, he was different.

“Anybody who doesn’t fit is an outsider,” Clemons said.

Clemons filed internal complaints, charges with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and eventually his lawsuit citing Memphis’s 2014 anti-discrimination ordinance. The city denied his claims and began settling in 2017, agreeing to increase LGBT sensitivity training. The Memphis Police Department declined to comment on Clemons’ lawsuit.

The police department has actively participated since 2016 in the city’s efforts to make Memphis a more inclusive workplace, said Alexandria Smith, the city’s chief human resources officer. Today, Memphis has a LGBTQ employee resource group and also recruits officers at Pride fairs.

“We really want to open our doors to a variety of individuals to come and work for us,” Smith said.

Clemons said that while the lawsuit put stress on everyone involved, he believes suing ended the homophobic harassment and improved his workplace environment. He did not take a leave of absence during the litigation. Months after settling, he transferred to the training academy. He kept his role as LGBTQ community liaison and is running for City Council.

A LGBT Holiday Survival Guide: Surround Yourself With Love

0

The holidays are difficult in general for many people but are even more devastating for the LGBTQ community. We are encouraged to go home and spend time with our families. However, many in the LGBTQ community suffer anxiety and loneliness due to ostracization by their families. As I think of my friends who are not welcomed home, I flash back to one of the loneliest holidays I’ve ever experienced: Thanksgiving 2001. I will never forget that day because of the rejection and isolation it brought me.

The circumstances leading up to the holiday were challenging, but I never anticipated what it would become. My partner at the time had been diagnosed with cancer. We clung to each other with every ounce of faith as our lives were turned upside down. She decided to share her diagnosis and her sexual identity with her parents, simultaneously. I thought that that was too much for her parents to process at one time. But she went ahead and told them.

Initially, her parents had expressed gratitude for my presence in their daughter’s life because they assumed, I was a platonic friend. Her mother told her to tell me that they loved and appreciated me for taking care of her when they could not. They lived in another state and would not be able to travel until her surgery.

Everything changed when she divulged the true nature of our relationship.

Once my girlfriend recuperated from surgery, we made plans to visit her parents for Thanksgiving. I was shocked when she told me that her parents didn’t know she was bringing me home for the holiday.

I said, “Babe… you didn’t ask them?”

She said, “They know you’re my girlfriend.”

“But that doesn’t mean they accept it,” I replied.

I tried to calm my nerves. Surely, they would welcome me with open arms, especially after I had devotedly taken care of their sick daughter, I thought.

I’ll never forget the discomfort I felt upon our arrival in town. We had rented a condo nearby for the occasion. I sensed my partner’s energy change as she spoke to her mother over the phone to tell her we had arrived.  She could barely look at me as she hung up. She said her mother did not feel comfortable with me coming to dinner.

I was devastated. Dinner? This was not just dinner. This was Thanksgiving, the one holiday of the year when we share our blessings with those we love. I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs: Who was by your daughter’s side when she received her diagnosis? Who held her as she cried herself to sleep each night? Who held her hair back as she vomited endlessly from the chemo? Who shaved their head to make her feel she was not alone in this battle? ME…!

I am always shocked by the hypocrisy of so-called Christians who judge others by manipulating Bible scripture to fit their intolerant beliefs. My mind demanded to know, how could you not accept someone who loved your child in sickness?

I wept as I sat alone in a darkened room on Thanksgiving, while my girlfriend was surrounded by her family. Even in my sadness, I thought of how blessed I was to have a family that loves me unconditionally. I am blessed to have parents who welcome and love whomever I choose to love. I realize not everyone is that fortunate.

During this holiday season, I pray for my friends who are not welcomed home for the holidays because of whom they choose to love. I pray that they surround themselves with friends and chosen family who love them unconditionally. I can’t help but think of the late Nina Simone’s words of wisdom from You’ve Got to Learn: “You’ve got to learn to leave the table when love’s no longer being served.” I’ve come to believe that family is not always blood. Home is where the heart is.

Mo’Nique

(Stylist: Troy Clinton & Photographer: SterlingPhotography Hair: Brandi Mallory Makeup:Tommie Alsobrook)

Academy Award winner and legendary comedian Mo’Nique opens up about dealing with stigma, what it takes to change, and appreciating today. Best known for her numerous acting roles on TV and movie screens, Mo’Nique first gained fame as a member of the Queens of Comedy, as well as for her roles in the 1990s-2000s TV series Moesha and her spin-off series the Parkers. For her role in the film Precious, in 2009, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2015, she received rave reviews for her performance as Ma Rainey in the HBO biopic Bessie, for which she also earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination  and many more acclaimed roles.

This issue is dedicated to World AIDS Day, which will mark its 30th anniversary on December 01, 2018, will be “Know Your Status.”

Significant progress has been made in the AIDS response since 1988, and today three in four people living with HIV know their status. But we still have miles to go, as the latest UNAIDS report shows, and that includes reaching people living with HIV who do not know their status and ensuring that they are linked to quality care and prevention services.

This issue intentionally provided space to center attention for TransAwareness Week beginning November 14-20, 2018. The flyer below details the week long events and activities that OutMemphis Gay & Lesbian Community Center will host. For more information please contact Kayla Gore at Kgore@outmemphis.org

LOVE WINS! THIS IS NO ORDINARY LOVE!

Their love story began Cyberspace. In June of 2012, knowing what they both needed, God brought them together as soulmates through the wires and fibers of the internet. After Erik sent a “what’s up” message to Terrell, his response marked the beginning of an amazing connection between the two. Immediately, they decided that they had to meet in person. When they did, they were both nervous. But when they smiled and their eyes locked, they both knew in that moment that there was definitely something special about one another.

Erik and Terrell Davis

Erik had family plans that night, so they were only able to talk for an hour or so before he had to leave and meet up with his cousin. The whole time Erik was out, he could think only of Terrell. Finally, he told his cousin, “I got to go!” and felt like he couldn’t call Terrell fast enough. “It felt like the scene in Cinderella, like I only had until midnight to claim my prince,” Erik says. When he called Terrell to make plans again for the very same night, Terrell was just as excited to be hearing from him so soon.

Erik and Terrell Davis

They spent the night talking endlessly and getting to know one another, while Erik introduced Terrell to his guilty pleasure: The Real Housewives of Atlanta. They both reflect on that night as one of the best in their lives, one they knew had been concocted as a gift to them from none other than God above. They have been inseparable ever since. “We were two totally different individuals,” Terrell says, “but our heart and soul mended together as one.”

Vernon Terrell Davis, 35, was born in Memphis, TN and works in retail management. Erik D. Davis, 37, was born Yazoo City, MS and works in healthcare.
