MOONLIGHT THE DRAMA FILM OF GAY BLACK LOVE WILL PREMIERE IN MEMPHIS, TN

0

On Thursday, November 10th, tickets go on sale at 11:30 am for the 7:15 pm showing of the critically acclaimed movie Moonlight, which will premiere in Memphis, TN at Malco Ridgeway Four, 5853 Ridgeway Center (Tickets are only available at this location).

There will be an “Exclusive Special Screening” at 6:30 pm Hosted by Erskine Gillespie with a Red Carpet reception where all attendees are asked to wear their “Fiercest Shaded of Blue.”  At the conclusion of the film, there will be a panel discussion narrated by The Unleashed Voice founder Davin D. Clemons.

Moonlight is a 2016 American drama film written and directed by Barry Jenkins, with a story by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and stars Trevante Rhodes, Andre’ Holland, Janelle Monae, Ashton Sanders, Jharrel Jerome, Naomie Harris, and Mahershala Ali.

Moonlight is labeled a “timeless story of human connection and self-discovery,” Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

With summer blockbuster season wound down, and with the holidays still a few weeks out, people looking for a gratifying time at the movies need look no further. In a season dominated by Republican attacks on people of color and African-American men, Director Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight depiction of black gay love is a beautiful antidote.

In Moonlight the focus is on people of color living in Miami, (No Whitewashing) and the struggles they face within their own communities in coming out and living their lives as gay men and women. The film provides a picture of the LGBT community beyond young 20-somethings, cute kids in glee club or middle-class white couples. On that level, Moonlight presents one of the most real portraits of the community in recent years.

As the LGBTQ community has been granted the right to marry and enjoy marriage equality under the law. Gay men, in particular, argue among themselves about masculinity.  The image of masculinity is seen just about everywhere which creates a singular paradigm about gay men. Some are terrified of somehow looking weak or less than, stress and promote their masculinity to the point of recklessness. Moonlight deals with that very subject in a striking and poignant way.  Moonlight isn’t afraid to show just how damaging the pressure to conform to a certain standard of masculinity can be.

Finally, more than anything else, Moonlight might just be the best movie of the year. Writer-director Barry Jenkins directs with confidence and sensitivity. His writing style has a beautiful subtlety—characters always seem to say more than what they’re actually saying. Likewise, he and cinematographer James Laxton film the Miami vistas in lush blues and greens, capturing the unmistakable beauty and feel of the city. In a time of a seemingly endless litany of superhero and sci-fi epics, Moonlight offers a thoughtful, original alternative, directed and acted with precision and thought. The movie remembers that despite all the headway the LGBTQ movement has made in terms of legal acceptance, we still have work to do in the hearts and minds of the American people…beginning with ourselves.

#GayMediaSoWhite “Snubs” Frank Ocean “Blonde” Album Release

The enigmatic Frank Ocean quietly released his long awaited second album “Blonde” to the quite fanfare of little media coverage. The Twitterites’ tweeted ‘#gaymediasowhite because the largest gay media publications failed to acknowledged Ocean presumably because he is black. Frank Ocean broke onto the scene four years ago and disrupted the heternormative boundaries with his destruction of the gender binary. Ocean challenged the assumptions of sexual identification with his frankness about sexuality.
Yet the question remains why would followers of Ocean become upset when predominately white sponsored media outlets refuse to cover his music? Are we that naïve to the facts that racial discrimination is rampant even in the Gay Communities? This isn’t the first time that there was an outcry about #gaymediabeing so white and this undoubtedly won’t be the last!
This latest snub should serve as a reminder to the African-American gay community that you are not guaranteed a fanfare celebration for your achievements just because you are a celebrity. The Oscars and the American Music Awards has repeatedly demonstrated that either you are too black, or too gay to get a nomination. What are you going to do? BOYCOTT? No, you get your own!
Diversity and inclusion is not guaranteed nor seemingly welcomed by evidence of recent Black Pride celebrations around the United States. This divide is much deeper than Ocean’s current situation; it is rooted in our racist history where white privilege is the rule of thumb.
International reviews indicate Ocean delivers soundly with his esoteric style. It should be noted that Ocean has comfortably spoken about his gender fluidity and should be heralded as paving the way for dismantling “labels” for us all.
I encourage all fans of Ocean to support his music especially the LGBTQ Community and I encourage all concerned readers to support other media outlets who support you. So, the next time your favorite “colored artist or actor” is snubbed by white control media visit a black owned media and just maybe you’ll find what you are looking for! Black Gay Media to the RESCUE!
“Blonde” is now available on iTunes and is currently streaming in Apple Music.

Eddie Wiley And “Pansexuality” Don’t Get It Twisted!

0

In TUV Magazine September/October 2016 “Love Wins” issue Eddie Wiley beautifully explains the principles on how one can live Beyond the Binary, “Love Without A Limit” in his most personal article yet written for TUV Magazine. Wiley is candid and unapologetic while sharing his intimate feelings about living out loud as a Pansexual.

As Wiley explains “Pansexuality” is one who is “not limited or inhibited in sexual choices with regards to gender or activity.”  In other words Pansexuals does not focus on sex or gender identity, but instead focus solely on the person!

In one of my favorite pieces written by Wiley he asserts his position to the readers by carefully guiding you along the rules of Pansexuality while pointing out why it is important to debunk “social constraints.”

Wiley is exemplary with shifting the readers carefully along the definitions of Pansexuality and refuting the comparisons of Bisexuality.  It is here where the article entraps you with laughter and frankness as Wiley delivers the intended points of his identify with crafty statements such as “Don’t Get it Twisted because I know who I am and what I like.”

Not everyone will understand everything about Pansexuality just by reading this article, states Wiley.  But Wiley has put together a few myths in hopes to get you started on your path of enlightenment toward tolerance and acceptance of others.

To read or inquire more about pansexuality or to interview Eddie Wiley you can find him on social media and send your inquires @EddiewLive or Facebook At Eddie Wiley #YouGot Questions #EddieGotAnswers

NYC Celebrated It’s 19th Black Pride “Black is Beautiful”

0

NYC Celebrated its 19th year of Black Pride Events for five days beginning August 17, 2016 through August 21, 2016.

received_1495470790479863The Black LGBT Pride began as a result of the Gay Black minority community in the United States feeling marginalized and less a part of the whole Gay community in participation, organization and administration. There was also the factor of socio-cultural differences that prevented the sub-community in full participation in the gay movement.

“Many queer people of color do not feel comfortable or welcomed at most mainstream LGBT Pride events,” says Earl Fowlkes Jr., president and CEO of the Center for Black Equity, which organizes D.C. Pride. “There is still a racial divide within the LGBT mainstream, with many black LGBT folks feeling as though they have to step away from their racial identity when going to community Prides.”

The Black Gay Prides today as metamorphosed into a well established events that unite and bring together black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people to celebrate both their African heritage and sexual orientation

FB_IMG_1471920596991Lee Souljah, Coordinator of NYC Black Pride told TUV Magazine that “the theme of this years NYC Black Pride is “Black is Beautiful”. It poses a fundamental query and forces us to ponder….have we evolved to that place in which we recognize the beauty in blackness…in all the complexities of the interwoven fabrics of blackness…..a celebration of an ancestral greatness… a derivative of brown baptize earth…..it has something to say about what it means to be fully human and free.”

Souljah exclaimed, “Have we gotten to the point in which the reflection that stares back……from that introspective mirror….is one of greatness…and we understand that we have made universal strides that helped and shaped our humanity…a community whose legacy consists of an early trans social justice movement…the true birth of our civil and human rights…..this is where Black Pride arises from…those who are no longer here in body….yet whose spirits haunts us like holy and ghost…. This is that moment…Where We Move Forward and reflect back to learn from our mistakes…honor and bless our past….lift up our ancestral voices….if only to reflect on Our Legacy….and raise the standard….so when We Fellowship.…Our Greatness Shines.”

The Unleashed Voice Magazine also made it’s debut in this years NYC Black Pride. Gift bags were given to select attendees containing many goodies and one of them was TUV Magazine!  New York City Hottest Party Promoter Bakla Mo’ is also a Project Manager/Talent Scout for TUV Magazine and carried the lead with introducing the Gay Publication to the vast multicultural community of NYC.
