New Cover Alert!

Urban Dictionary describes “MAKING MOVES” as the act of furthering oneself to improve one’s circumstances. “Never made a move out here unless I was certain” – Drake

TUV Magazine releases The Empowerment Issue “MAKING MOVES” to celebrate the lifestyles and accomplishments of individuals around our communities. We wish we could’ve dedicated a thousand pages to celebrate everyone and we will get there one day.

The Empowerment issue is dedicated to the many people who spend a lot of time thinking about where we “should” be in our careers and lives. Somewhere in our virtual digital envy we spiral, we start to beat ourselves up about how we’re not reaching our goals quickly enough. And that’s about when a feeling starts creeping in—a fear, really—that maybe, just maybe, we can’t accomplish the growth we want. Maybe this is just who we are and what we’re stuck with. HOLD UP! Help is inside these pages to combat this negative self-talk! Go ahead and do yourself a favor and heed the advice and transparency shared by our guests this month. They will share how they’ve been able to accomplish their goals and what they are doing to help the community!

On the Cover is Dred Carpenter a prolific actor, public figure, writer, and entrepreneur who forever changed how lesbians can see themselves in her role as ‘Miller Harris’ in the YouTube black lesbian web series “Between Women.” Dred’s career has also included acting roles in Standpoint and Church Hurt. We caught up with DRED to obtain an exclusive interview and to see what moves she’s been making and what her legions of fans can expect next!

World AIDS Day 2019 Light of Hope Award

0
  • For Immediate Press Release 11/30/2019:
Each year as part of the World AIDS observation the Shelby County Health Department awards a “Light of Hope Award.” The Light of Hope awards recognized a business, person, and organization that have consistently shown a strong desire to assist and support HIV/Aids care, education, and prevention.
We are proud to share that “The Unleashed Voice Magazine” has received the “Light of Hope Award” for the business in Shelby County.
Publishers & Editor-in-Chief of TUV Media – Davin D. & Gwen D. Clemons
We are honored to accept the award for providing continous coverage about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The statisics alone are alarming enough that we are intentional about keeping the focus on HIV/AIDS. This has to become a priority for all of us. Unfortunately, African-Americans in this community are rank #1 for being at-risk for contracting HIV/AIDS.  As of May 2019, Memphis, TN was ranked eighth in the country when it comes to new transmissions of HIV, says Gwendolyn D. Clemons.
TUV Magazine encourages getting tested to know your status and are community partners with various organizations that provide FREE HIV/AIDS & STD testing (See our “We Proudly Support” section).
This year the Shelby County Health Department will observe their World AIDS Program on November 22, 2019 at 1:00pm in the auditorium at Trezevant High School located 3350 North Trezavant Street, Memphis TN 38127. The founders of TUV Magazine will be in attendance to receive their award!
TUV Magazine will observe World AIDS Day Monday, December 2, the Memphis Ryan White Program (a part of the Shelby County Health Department that administers federal funding for HIV/AIDS services) will be holding a lantern lighting ceremony at Beale Street Landing (251 Riverside Dr, Memphis, TN 38103) in observance of World AIDS Day.

THIS IS US! Magazines Read Differently When You Are Awake!

“That magazine reads different when you see a young, intelligent, handsome, black man running for public office on the cover,” said TUV Magazine co-founder Gwendolyn Clemons. Yes, the co-founder of TUV Magazine is speaking about her son, Davin.

The Awakening Issue is here! TUV Magazine presents “The Soul of the People.”  Each issue is intentionally published to present an inclusive society void of discrimination, prejudices, stigmas, and bias. The goal of the Awakening Issue is to show the world itself; “This is Us” whether it is accepted or not!

On the Cover: Dr. Davin D. Clemons is interviewed about his political run for Memphis City Council District 6. Clemons is new to politics but not new to public service. As a community advocate he wear the hats of a philanthropist, entrepreneur, and public servant. Clemons is a 17 year veteran with the Memphis Police Department and serves as the LGBTQ Liasion for the department. Below is an excerpt of the interview.

Dr. Davin Clemons “Running With The People”

Q: How has your community involvement thus far helped to prepare you for this position?

A: The theme of my campaign is “Running With the People,” but we’ve been running with the people for as long as seven years ago. From the inception of the church, we birthed TUV Radio Show, TUV Magazine, and our nonprofit Relationship Unleashed. We birthed the Cathedral Foundation that hosts Tri-State Pride. We have been unapologetically involved in the community, from adopting elementary schools, purchasing kids’ winter coats and helping with clothing drives. We went out and registered people to vote citywide. We helped restore felons with their voting rights. We were instrumental in the ordinance of the city pushing equal protection for all city employees. We spoke up against the senseless killing of our transgender sisters and brothers. I even marched in the protest to remove the statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest. In fact, I almost went to jail protesting the removal of that statue.

An Op-ed to Thaddeus Matthews “Nope Not Today Satan!”

0

In recent days Thaddeus Matthews a self-described TV shock talk host has launched an all-out assault on Dr. Davin Clemons bid for the Memphis City Council District 6 seat. By Matthews own admission his interested in the upcoming Memphis election is only on the Mayor’s race and District 6. Why is Matthews only interested in these two races?

It is apparent to me as a voter and relative of Dr. Clemons that Matthews interest in District 6 is to pull potential voters from Clemons in favor of Edmund Ford, Sr.  Matthews is using tactics similar to Donald Trump to appeal and arouse the so-called “Black Christian Voters” who oppose homosexuality. Matthews and the candidate who I believe paid him to assualt Dr. Clemons (Edmund Ford, Sr.) are clearly trying to use homophobia for political ends. This tactic is nothing new and has been used even by the most unscrupulous in the industry. This bait they are dangling to draw Dr. Clemons into an insidious war of words will not work.

According to a recent poll by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights there is a tendency for political leaders to stir up prejudice through homophobic rhetoric, especially during elections. It seems that the use of homophobia has become a ubiquitous part of the contemporary political landscape in the upcoming Memphis election.

The reality is that widespread homophobia exists in many societies around the world, and those in power use it as a tool to bolster legitimacy, increase popularity and distract from pressing social ills.

This is a clear moment where Matthews is trying to vet and bait voters by using religious dogma to justify hate and discrimination.  As long as I’ve been alive this has always been a tactic used to justify reasons to discriminate and marginalize LGBT folks, especially by African-Americans. There has got to come a time when we take a stand against tyrants such as Matthews.  I believe that the time is now!

Matthews is intentionally using homophobia for political ends in the upcoming District 6 race. This tactic is to draw attention away from the real issue District 6 is facing. District 6 has suffered enough under the hands of the Ford regime which has led to rampant unemployment, lack of viable political representation, poverty, blight, lack of equity, failing schools, failing infrastructure and not to mention that 38126 is the poorest zip code in the State of Tennessee.

Dr. Clemons campaign is not about an ideology of a famous name it is about the urgency of the people who live in District 6.  District 6 has suffered because of the lack of leadership to direct District 6. We’ve seen the potential of what District 6 could have been and what actually is happening, which is NOTHING!

The time has come when we as a community must stand up against people like Matthews. In this moment we will not stand around and watch Matthews slander and belittle a great community leader such as Dr. Clemons.

Let’s be clear this bigoted attack from Matthews is more about stopping Dr. Clemons momentum against his paid endorser Edmond Ford, Sr.  Why else would a meaningless talk show host spend an entire show dedicated to talking about Dr. Clemons and his family?

Matthews’s record and history of being a paid flunky to the highest bidder warrants caution.  Matthew is the person with a history of arrests ranging from lewd conduct to stalking. He’s been at the center of too many embarrassing scandals to mention. Any association to this type of person should be immediately rejected because of his cringing likeness to Donald Trump.

If Black Lives Matter, then All Black Lives should Matter including Gay Black Lives! It is now time to “PICK A SIDE!”

Dr. Davin D. Clemons, DMin (RECEIPTS)

Dr. Clemons is a community leader in the City of Memphis. He is a business owner, a philanthropist, and devout Christian. He along with his husband Dr. Darnell Gooch, Jr., co-founded of The Cathedral of Praise Church of Memphis Inc., seven years ago. The Cathedral is a church that truly welcomes all people and has been awarded several proclamations by U.S. Representation of District 9 Steve Cohen, Former TN 29th District State Senate and current Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, and Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland.

Dr. Clemons earned his doctoral degree from Memphis Theological Seminary. He is a 16 year veteran for the Memphis Police Department and serves as the LGBTQ Liaison. He is a member of Clergy Defending Rights for All, National Chapel for the United Progressive Pentecostal Church of Atlanta, co-founder of The Unleashed Voice Media Firm, Talk Show Host on The Unleashed Voice Radio Show, and Editor of The Unleashed Voice Magazine, named 2018 Top 40 under 40, named 2019 Champion of Pride for the State of Tennessee by The Advocate Magazine and much more.

We cannot “AFFORD” to have another “Ford” representing District 6, pun intended!

HAPPY

PRIDE!

In June of 1969, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBTQ Americans were commonly subjected. This uprising marks the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBTQ Americans.

This year June 2019 will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall, for which New York City will host WorldPride. This is the first time WorldPride has been held in the United States (I wonder why, but I digress) and is expected to be the largest Pride celebration ever. It is expected that roughly 4.5 million people will line the streets of NY.

Why is this important? It is important because the voices of the people are being “Unleashed” at a magnitude unseen before. Collectively, LGBT folks and allies will demonstrate that fighting and celebrating for LGBT humanity is an important and necessary cause.

TUV Magazine obtained an exclusive interview with actor, activist, singer, and now author Julian J. Walker.
